Can Glass be Re-etched?

I have a hurricane lamp glass chimney with some of the frosting worn off, so I tried using a cheap spray-on frosting paint (which looks awful) to cover it. I then removed this frosting paint with a combo of paint stripper and steel wool and got back down to the original etching, but also took some more of the etching off in the process. Can this glass chimney (which is fine structually, and a hard to find size) be re-etched? That is, I'm assuming it was originally etched by the manufacturer and they didn't use the cheap spray method I was using. I've never used etching cream before, but was wondering if re-etching would look ok, or would the original missing bits still show through? Thanks for any info.

Maybe sand blasting would be the way to go. Blast the old crap off and leave a true frost.
