Saturday saw DS off to Berlin NH with the HS team; they left at noon and returned at 11:30 PM, ahead of the snow. DS's JV team lost, the varsity won. DD had a game in Boxboro MA- an hour ride and while it has great food, the ice is awful there. It is primarily a figure skating rink that makes money as "home ice" to the several of the smaller hockey leagues in the area. Good game for her and they won for a change.
Well, Sunday started with a dark and horrid ride to the rink at 6 AM. Since it was snowing, we left with plenty of time and arrived in time to watch the game before hers.
Her first game of the day is with a team known for it's lack of sportsmanship. DD and Jack were given permission to "make board sandwiches as needed". (Generally skating some one into the boards is discouraged in rec level play, but that team does it anyway. DD and Jack are the only two on her team with the size and skill level to do it. (Jack is a nine year old giant). It was a 3-1 game, going to the bad guys. But since they usually beat teams 11+ to zip, it felt like a victory.
After that she had practice, a "light work out and game play". Then a bunch of us headed out for a quick "brunch" before hitting the snowy roads to Marlboro MA. Roads were much better by then.
That was a very exciting game - final score 1-1 after leading most of the game 1-0. DD scored for her team early in the second period and couldn't figure out why the whistle blew until her team started hugging her. The tying goal was a Keystone Cops goal. Our goal flopped on the puck, the puck went skittering away. One of the other team fell on the goal and they tangled up. Three of our team attempted to get control while defense guarded the crease. It might have worked, but the other coach pulled the goalie and put a sixth skater on. Who promptly lost control, took out all front line in a spectacular feet first skid and the puck rolled in on edge.
NOW - the on topic part.
I've been trying to work on a chart for DD, honoring her love of the game. Got her, in gear, stick in hand, looks good, discarded the helmet or crown in favor of hair. Might even make a braid to show over the shoulder. But there is where I am stuck. Rink "diagram" as background is just kind of blah. I toyed with adding her number from her various teams over the years. Yuck.
BUT - the hockey shop in Marlboro had some great shirts in the window. My hands down favorite was "TWO HANDS ON THAT STICK" and then the light bulb went off.
Around the edge, I'm going to put all the hockey phrases I can think of, starting with "she shot's, she scores", "two hands on that stick", "stick on the ice" and what ever else I can come up with; I can see it in my head just enough to know it be exactly right.
