OT. Origin of the name "Publix".

It is nice that soneone actually reads the emails!! I got this email from them today; " Thank you for your email. We appreciate our customers taking the time to contact us. In regards to your inquiry, your comments were forwarded and the manager stated the following:

Thank you for shopping at our Plantation Publix. I am glad you are very happy with our store. I would like to follow up with you on your questions. Mr. George got the name Publix from a movie theater called Paramount Publix in the 1920's. They went out of business. He liked the name and used it for his supermarket. Please call or stop by the store, ask for me or the Store Manager, Greg Dills. Let us know what low carb items you are looking for and we can get them for you.

Thank you, John Cunningham Assistant Store Manager Plantation Publix 863-853-1778

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us. If we can be of any further assistance regarding this matter, please either call our Consumer Relations toll-free number at 1-800-242-1227, write us at the Publix Super Markets Corporate Office, PO Box 407, Lakeland, FL 33802, ATTN: Consumer Relations, or contact us at our website, publix.com and mention your reference number, # 431792."

Thanks Gill for the info. I'll bet I could surprise the manager of my St. Lucie West Publix with that knowledge.

They really are a very customer oriented store, but now they have far too many of their own named products and not so much of others.

Thank for that! Publix is my most favorite grocery store ever! Unfortunately, we're moving to Mobile, Alabama this year and they don't have one there ... pout pout.

Thanks again! Jennifer

My Publix beefs: (hoping some top Publix exec reads this - ha)

all that prepackaged produce - yes, I know they'll break up a package but that wastes their time, mine, and packaging materials.

They also need to put a ring-for-service bell somewhere in the meat department, same for the bakery.

The pharmacy? Don't get me started. You can leave a written rx there, in order to extend the one on file and they will NOT put it in the system. The next time you call the automated servicefor a refill, you get that bit about "we need to call the doctor" for an ok. The doctors claim they've beefed about this, but to no avail. Causes a lot of unnecessary calls and delays.

I notice they don't ask if you want the carry out service - I guess their feeling is that YOU"LL ask for it if you want it.

Publix likes: the house brands are pretty decent, and they have no courtesy card to fumble with. Prices seem to be competitive, and the advantage buys are worth waiting for. Nice that they sell first class stamp books right at the register now.

OK, we all have beefs ( especially the non-existent bell. However rather than vent here,*Publix doesn't read rctn*, why don't you go to their website, and put your complaint there?? I have had immediate response from that, and you will feel a hell of a lot better for having someone who can do something, listen to you!

well, I did say that in jest - plus ya never know if someone's searching the groups, maybe, for comments about their company. Yeah, in my dreams....

why don't you go to their

I'll try it. I have written to the Lakeland people in the past, and received the usual explanations, with no promise to investigate or change.

I tried for months to get my local Publix to put out a foam tray collection bin. It took a call and three written notes to the local manager.

I have found that many low level employees seem afraid to make suggestions to management. They don't even want to relay the requests. Evidently, there is no employee suggestion cum reward program.

Sorry,I didn't mean it to come out so obnoxiously loud! I think maybe we get such good response is that the HQ is here in our town, so the local stores have to keep on their toes.

I ran into my store manager prowling around the new Sweetbay the other day. Since he knows his customers by sight, we had a good time skulking together! I know the prices of things I buy regularly, so could give input!

I did eml them a number of days ago about the rx refill situation. Either they're scratching heads for a reply or didn't get the eml or are ignoring me.

Meahwhile, I have a new beef. Yesterday, in the midst of all the day before Easter shoppers, they had every stock person out there loadin' shelves, making the aisles traffic slow and navigation rough. I heard some intraemployeemutterings too - said they did this day before T'giving and Xmas too - I suggested they bring this up in a meeting and got that" Whaddaucrazy" look. Maybe this'll be the subject of my next eml.

Dear Mr Murray,

While visiting my hometown, Dunedin, Fl recently, I read the book Dunedin By Vincent Luisi, A. M. De Quesada. If you follow this link:

you will see that he wrote:"Dunedin's first "super" market was the Publix Market...This market and the name Publix were owned by W.E. "Ed" Humphrey. He eventually sold the name and rights to Mr. George Jenkins of Winter Haven...

Ed Humprey was our next door neighbor when I was a girl growing up in Dunedin.I was away from Florida for 20 years and always missed shoppoing at Publix. I'm now back in the State and happy again as I have 2 Publix within 2 miles of my home here in Gainesville. I would be interested to know if you agree with Mr. Luisi research.

Thank you,

Amy Zingarelli
