by Tatsuzo Shimaoka
This piece is decorated with jomon zogan, (rope-impressed inlay), that Shimaoka Sensei was designated a National Living Treasure for. The Nuka white is a traditional Mashiko glaze made from the ash of rice husks. The decoration is in Kuro (black) and Nuka glaze trailing.
This shape is a distinctive form that was also made by Shoji Hamada. It was always my favorite shape out of Sensei's Noborigama. It is a hard to find form. Hamada took the simple glaze trailing technique used by folk potters and turned it into an artform. Shimaoka continues this tradition. It is a wonderful stand alone piece, but can also be used in flower arranging. The four sides are pictured in the photographs. Two sides are grasses while alternative sides are a cross design.
The Jar is10 1/2" (26.5 cm) Tall and 6 1/2" (16.5 cm) wide. Comes with signed box, with cord and gold wrapping cloth, pictured below. You can also see his "TA" stamp in the photos of the bottom of the pot.
