Discontinued Fabric

Over the years, I have picked up FQs or yard or two of a particular print, then it's discontinued. Where do you find more, or the coordinating print? I always try to buy at least 1 yard of a nice print. But a year or more goes by before I find something to use it with, and then I want more. There should be a "clearing house" for old prints.

There's a lesson to be learned here: If you really like something, buy lots! I recommend Carol Doak's "Easy Stash Quilts" as a strategy for using lots of different fabrics together. NAYY Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap

Thanks to you for the websites. I knew about one of them but not the other. I don't remember Carol's book that you mentioned, and I'll look for it.

I did do some Googling -- it took me to eBay! Where I went and bought

*more* fabric -- not the ones I was looking for originally, of course. Groan!

I find gorgeous or too-cute-to-pass-up fabric and buy some thinking I'll find the perfect pattern for it. Then I put it in with all my other stash, and it gets buried down to the bottom. I really do have to simply stop buying more fabric. Yeah, right....

Just to let you know how bad I am -- about 6 months ago, I found this gorgeous purple fabric with lilacs. My favorite flower, and my favorite color. So I bought 5 yards!!! Then I put it in the bin, where, you guessed it, I already had some! So, I'm taking it out of the bin and putting in on top of my cutting table, so that I'll figure out how to use it. I mean, what am I saving all that fabric for??

I'm afraid I'll be this old lady with floor to ceiling fabric, and my kids will have to sort it all out and dispose of it somehow. But, who ever puts "I want my lilac fabric to go to..." in their wills? LOL

Are you people as hopeless as I am? :)

Absolutely! I have done the very same thing.

I AM that little(?) old lady with floor to ceiling fabric rofl. So what's wrong with that?

I have a "short list" that my executor (a total NON-sewer of any kind who is appalled at the amount of "stuff" I have collected) has to ring when I die. She is to just whisper "she'd dead" and hang up, then go out to dinner. I have told her that by the time she gets back the place will be stripped bare as my quilty friends will come with bags and buckets and wheelbarrows and utes and trucks and vans and . . . . . . . .

Competition to get on the short list is fierce lol (Bribes accepted - I can be bought but I am not cheap!)

On a more serious note, if your stash is THAT big make some direction on how you want it disposed of - give to charitable groups, leave to local Guild, divide between friends, whatever.

No, of course I never buy more fabric than I can use! Snort! If you want to ease your suffering, I offer your excess fabric a warm and loving home. Roberta in D

We just had a discussion about that very thing. :)

I *do* have in my will who gets my sewing equipment, stash, and quilts. DH would know what to do with it, but if something happened to both of us, my nieces and nephews would have no clue and probably would throw everything out. (Then my ghost would have to haunt them, and the next thing you know the afterlife is just work, work, work. *grin*)

It just takes a minute to get that kind of thing spelled out in your will, and will save your loved ones lots of decisions at a time when they are least able to make them.

Rene', there's a quilt/fabric shop in northern Illinois with a stock of discontinued lines of fabric. I haven't been in there in 2 yrs. but have heard things haven't changed, just expanded. Old Times-Quilters Heaven 954 N Main St Princeton, IL 61356 (815) 872-9841

They are used to receiving scraps of fabric to match, let you know if they have it in stock (very good chance ), what it will cost you.

Good luck!

Ragmop/Sandy--thinking it's time for a long road trip (Princeton is my hometown, the shop is about 3 blocks for "our house")

I haven't been over there in a long time. I may have to schedule a road trip one of these days. There is another shop in that town that is pretty cute...but not so congested.

Quilter's Garden

527 S. Main St. Princeton, IL
formatting link
is a regular quilt show, while Old Time-Quilters Heaven focuses on fabric, fabric, fabric.

Q Garden has a retreat center upstairs... now that the old Bed & Breakfast south of there has closed maybe I need to stay about the quilt shop. I could pretend I'm on retreat. But it is closer to my mom's home... will think about that... . ;-P

The train goes thru' Princeton 2-4 times a day, the depot is right across the street from Old Time-QH. ;-D

Uh...I was going to ask to be put on your "Short List" but realized that I have enough problems of my own. LOL

My stash is big -- but I've been collecting fabric for the past 40 years. I can't throw anything away, you know. That little 3" scrap will be *needed* someday in that scrap quilt in the sky. :)

Kathy, my problem is that I don't know who would really appreciate it. DD does sew a little, and has made a few baby quilts. She makes fun of my stash, though. DIL wants to learn how to quilt, but is way too busy a career-girl right now. DIL loves my stash, though. Hmm.

LOL - I have in the past few months begun to be ruthless. Those little ol'

3" scraps are finally hittin' the turf. However if I could find more of that pink fabric with the cutesy little old flowers on it some of which were highlighted with silver sparkly thread, now I would save ever 1" scrap of that I could find!! I done bought 4 yards of it from M&L Fabrics a couple years ago (actually about 3 years) and am crossing everything that they've still got some of it hidden away. man I just love that fabric.

Sounds like DIL should be the one! Even if she doesn't have time right now (and you aren't planning to kick the bucket right this minute, are you?), if she loves the stash, she'll love that you thought enough to leave it to her.

Our guild had the two owners of Quilters Garden come for a meeting. They have a cute and funny routine as "Aunt Sewsie". Kinda dorky but lightweight and they show some of their shop samples and pattens.

Yep, I think you're right. DIL is it. Thanks!
