OT (but about quilts): Can we Help?

It seems that thousands of people in Australia have lost everything. I know it seems like a drop when bucket is needed, but can we -- or should we, as in is it even possible or desireable -- send quilts to some agency there so at least people can have something to begin life anew? Or make nights in an emergency shelter a bit more comfortable?

Maybe it would be better to send small bits of cash .... I don't know. But I do know that something of this horrible scale nags at me to do something.

Just read down lower... now I know...

Prayers for all... who lost loved ones (two or four legged!) and for those who lost cherished treasures.

OK, so I've been so absorbed in my own personal world, that I have no idea what is going on in Australia. My bad. What the heck happened, and how can I help?

Its a wonderful thought Sunny, but from what I have been reading at the moment money is all that is wanted.

At the moment so many areas are not set up for food, water, clothing and bedding donations, no doubt this will be happening in the next couple of days.

Another view of that Dee is that there is no places left to store the goods donated nor for the people who are to receive them. They have nowhere to go, there is nothing left.

So very sad.

Dee -- is there any organization besides the Red Cross to whom we could make donations for the fire victims in OZ? I should imagine the need for help is *similar* to what New Orleans went through after Katrina. Totally different of, course, but similar in what is needed by the survivors because EVERYTHING has been destroyed. I remember going to the store and buying up travel sizes of all the necessities and making up baggies of stuff -- toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, socks, comb or small brush, etc. All of the local churches had donation centers where clothing and bedding could be left for transport to the areas most in need. This time the unfortunate folks are half a world away so I think the best those of us here in the States can do is to make donations to the legitimate care organization of our choice. I'm sure quilts will be needed and appreciated but just not right now.

I suspected money was the thing to do now. I'm just so horrified by this. And some of the fires were apparently set deliberately. I hope they find out who did it and hang 'em high.

Sunny, I feel the way you do, but right now I think our best bet is to donate to the International Red Cross. It's so overwhelming, that I think quilts would just be in the way. May after it's all over they will have a better grip on what's needed. Gen

Thanks for the links Dee. For those interested who can't make one big donation, there's no reason you can't make several small donations each billing cycle. The folks in OZ will be needing help for many months, if not years, to come. Because DD works for the non-profit homeless shelter I've learned a lot about how donations go when there is a crisis. There are usually a lot of donations right at the start of some crisis. Very rarely is the crisis dealt with right away so donations are needed over time until all of the "ripple effect" problems are dealt with. So if you can't give until next month, etc. don't think your help isn't still needed! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

If you can't make a big donation, or even a series of donations, a small donation is fine; any amount will help. PAT

Tonight the death toll is officially 200, but there are still areas that haven't been searched.

At last count there were about 900 houses lost.
