stash infusion gloat :)

Hey All,

Had to gloat a little. ;) I was in wal-mart yesterday for all the normal, boring stuff. Cruised through the $1 table just to looksee. Keeping my eyes out for some twill to do a vest for my DBIL. (looking for some heavy weight black twill, may order some from fabric.com but right now I'm looking for cheap twill to do a mock up. Anyway....)

Found two pieces of gorgeous stuff. Got a little over 3 yards of a deep red, buttery soft knit. I'm sure it's probably poly, didn't burn test it. But it feels and acts like a rayon knit. Gorgeous stuff. I was thinking of a top for me and maybe DD. Although, it's 60" wide and 3 yards would do a pajama set for me. (I'd probably never get dressed again.)

Then I found a bolt of a really gorgeous stretch twill. (won't work for the vest since I want something sans stretch for that, but oh well.) It's black. About skirt/jacket weight. Slight stretch only. 2" crossgrain will stretch to 3", really good recovery. The wrong side looks like a crepe, but the face of it is gorgeous! It feels like the softest brushed twill I've ever seen. Not really napped, like a moleskin or anything. Just a brushed twill. But beautiful. I got 6 yards. (45" wide.) I have a jacket cut out of it already, and I'm thinking a skirt to match. I cut view E of Simplicity 4099. (which I got on a $.99 sale.)

So 9 yards of fabric for $9! And it's gorgeous stuff. I'll post a link to pix when I get stuff done. We have a snow day today, so I may just take that as an excuse to play in my sewing room all day. Or at least after I get the little bit of housework done first. (then I can play guilt free. lol)

That sounds good! ;)

Oh, yummy! Is it nice and drapy?

Yay! Stash infusions are great, and cheap but quality stash infusions are the best kind! Well done.

Love that pattern, although I would alter the sleeve to be a

2-piece one, I just think they fit better. Are you going to line it?

Sometimes you can find a really good fabric deal at Walmart! Sounds like you're going to have lots of fun using it up!

The fabric in the link is absolutely gorgeous and I personally think it is perfect for your "BIG 50" dinner and the wedding. Emily

Well, the twill doesn't really have any significant drape to it. So I'm thinking either a fairly simple A line skirt or a gored skirt that doesn't flare much. (Gee...wonder why I'm thinking about gored skirts. Thanks Juno. lol)

It's so true! I really couldn't believe how nice these two pieces were for $1 a yard!!! I almost happy danced out of the store. heh heh

I wish I only went once a month. Seems like someone runs out of something about 3 days after I go to the store. Then I end up going way more often than I'd like. *sigh*

I did look to see if there would anything with enough drape for you to do a muslin for your outfit. ;) If I'd have found anything you were gonna get an email. But there wasn't anything that looked like it would work. Oh well. ;)

I'm probably going to leave the sleeve alone this first time. If I don't like the fit of it, it's easy enough to take the sleeves off and replace them. Plus with it being a stretch twill, it might be OK. Gonna play with it some.

And I have been dithering about lining it. The pattern doesn't call for a lining. However, I think I want one. It just makes a jacket so much nicer. There is a front facing and a back facing at the neck. So it would be pretty easy to cut a lining. My plan was to cut it the same minus the facings. That doesn't sound right....uh....but you know what I mean make the lining pieces the same except for cutting down the front piece so it will sew to the facing piece. (I can't make a whole lot of sense this early in the day...on a second snow day no less.) ;)

I agree, for the first effort the existing sleeve is probably fine.

For a "shirt style" jacket I don't line. But for anything more structured I usually do. And, yes, I knew exactly what you meant about drafting the lining, done it many times! ;-)

I'm so glad someone understands me!! ;) I think I'm going to leave the lining off for now. I don't have anything in stash that would work as a lining that has any stretch to it. I don't want to put a nonstretch fabric in there since this is a stretch twill. Just sounds like a bad idea to me. But, it would be nice to have a lining. But..... Can you tell I'm still dithering?

What do you think? Would a non-stretch woven be alright in there or would it drive me nuts? The main points where the lining would attach would be the facings. So it would be stretch to stretch there. The only place it might get really hairy is the lining fabric to the facings.

Ok back to the playroom...uh...sewing room. ;)

That's often my feeling when I'm trying to explain some complex sewing procedure. ;-}

A fairly deep ease-pleat in the CB should take care of the stretch issue. And maybe build a little more ease into the sleeves.

You could always do the "Couture" way, and hand stitch lining to facings. ;->

Right! I'm getting the baby things for DN finished today so I can get the house ready for the shower Sunday.
