Aaaarrrrgggghhh

And it isn't "talk like a pirate day"!

Piece of metal deep in my blank. It took a 1/32" (or so) chunk off of the tip of my 1/2" skew. I REALLY need to invest in a metal detector.

x-ray would be better. I have 3 metal detectors and they all miss nails near the center of a log. Maybe I should check a log before making blanks and then after roughing, then while finish turning. Most of the nails I find are near the center of the log and usually are mostly a nuisance. I do hate to sharpen a chainsaw.

these are features - make them part of your art. Bowls without features are just bowls. Treat, price, and sell accordingly

Sounds like he added some features to his skew, also.. Hope the nail wasn't inside a shaped bowl.. Not a very safe place to be using a skew, IMO..

My "stud finder" says it will penetrate 2" of wood.. never has, though..

Use a large heavy mallet...

Making a mortar (and pestle). I was squaring off the top rim.

you just need to accelerate the stud finder to a higher velocity to get better penetration - try something in excess of 6000 fpm, that should do it

Seems like it's about time for first-generation CAT scanners to be showing up on craiglist for $40, you haul it away ;-) You could probably even figure out where the grain was most interesting before you cut blanks...

You can put it in a microwave.

If the microwave sparks and burns up in smoke, ya got a nail.
