macomber looms

I am trying to come up with a reasonable price on used macombers...they are so damned coy about information and you have to go directly to them to buy! )-: Does anybody have an idea about current prices on the

8-harness treadle looms? I've been out of the textile thing for a long time and my "stored" information is 'way outdated,so I don't know what they're going for now. I have my eye on one. It's a bit narrower than I would wish, but it's a Macomber and suffiecient for what I plan to do. thanks

Have you looked on e-bay? I often go there to get an idea of asking price for various items, although I have yet to buy anything through them.

Well, I was bidding on one and lost..turns out to be a good thing, because that one was only 24" wide (which would be fine for scarves, etc, but limiting), although 8 harnesses. I started searching the net and found one closer to me for the SAME PRICE, same 8 harnesses, but 48" width, and in good shape, judging from the pictures (lots of them in detail!). I am so excited! I am sending a cheque this week and going over to pick it up in November...I am giving thanks for owning a pick-up! I can't believe I am about to own a Macomber! I am recovering from a broken back, so won't be able to thread up and get weaving until about mid-December, but it's definitely something to look forward to! I am looking at having some inventory ready for the Spring market. I am also so glad that I never gave away or sold all my shuttles etc when I sold my old loom (I was moving and expected to use the money to buy a new one when I got where I was going, since it was more expensive to ship the loom myself than pay s/h on a new one, but fate intervened!)

I used to live in New Orleans, in "da Quatuh" on Dumaine St....how are you and how did the storm treat you? Your name sounds real familiar. Outside of my hometown everybody calls me "Cassandra" and I used to work in the classical dept (before it shrank!) at Tower. I also used to perform with "Komenka." I've heard from and about only a handfull of friends so far. An old bud of mine is manager at Tower now and had a good report, but more is to come. "OZ" has a list of musicians on their web site that have checked in with them. Anyway, hope you are ok. I see on CNN that Cafe du Monde is open and rockin' again. That's a good sign! I was dying to run down there and help right after the storm but am smart enough to know that I would just have been in the way, since I would not have had a clue as to what NEEDED to be done. Sometimes well-meaning "helpers" are a liability rather than a help in those situatios. We have a group staying at a refurbished nursing home here and I at least gathered up a couple large bags of nice clothes. given the shape **I** am in right now, that was about my limit, but it felt good to do something!

Yes, my old one was 48" and I found that the most useful, unless I had planned to get into weaving large rugs/tapestries..Of course, 8 harnesses give you a LOT of double-weave options, so, if I decide I want to do something personal for my dining-room floor (it would be so pricey to do sometthing like that on commission I don't think anybody would pay it! Not around here, anyway. Of course, since my dog would then chew on it, it wouldn't be worth doing for myself, either! (-;), anyway..48 is a good width1 A few years ago I wove some yardage and made a jacket for my mother, which I got back when she passed on. I used a vogue pattern and it's still a lovely garment. I get complements on it whenever I wear it and love saying "Thanks, I wove the fabrid."
