backing for beading a cabochon

Someone recommended the backing for making a beaded cab, but I can't remember what it was. I've used leather one time, and it was such a pain. Was it Stitch Witchery? And then you put something like ultrasuede on the back?

I hope to get by WalMart or Hobby Lobby this week to get some if I can figure out what I need.

I use thin leather or suede scraps or lacy's stiff stuff. I've even used a piece of manila folder - worked great.

Since Lacey's Stiff stuff seems unobtainable here I have used interfacing. The stiff sew in type. We call it Vilene over here but Pellon seems to ring a bell. Shirley

Do you sew through the manilla folder?

That's what I was trying to think of! Thanks!

There is also buckram, it is a type of fabric used in book binding. You can soak it and make into a shape and it'll restiffen or so I've read. Like for mask making and other sculptural projects. I bought a giant roll of it but haven't tried it yet. It's supposed to be close to stiff stuff but more economical. Looking at it I'd say it is a much looser weave that is still fairly stiff, I planned to use it with ultra suede. My guess is that stiff stuff would be better if you can get it, I'm guessing that buckram will become less stiff as it's handled which beadwork takes a lot of.

Once I try it if it works I'll probably sell it on my website in sheets. I haven't had time to do beadwork in many moons though. If somebody here would like to ty it and tell me what you think I'll send some to you. It would be most helpful if you had tried these other things, to compare them.

Lol. I knew what you meant!

I spent about $1 on a piece of stiff stuff AND my backing fabric and I've got plenty to do a bunch of cabs. Lol. I'm glad I didn't have to buy 1/2 yard of each or anything!

Michaels carries a heavy felt like piece in many colors that can be used and then use the ultra suede as the final backing for a nicer look and to hide stitches. I forget what this felt is called , it is much heavier than regular felt and stiff. Marilee

It's called Eazy Felt. I've been using it instead of Stiff Stuff because it's less than half the price of Stiff Stuff, and it comes in colors.

Cheers, Carla
