When a Bad Bead Has a Change of Heart

Ok, I'll admit I was trying to make this bead NOT encased, but I cracked it, and the only way to heal a cracked bead is to melt it back together, so I decided to encase it before I melted it. It turned out pretty good, but after an hour in the torch, I was getting tired, and didn't work as hard as I should have at getting a perfect shape.

Now what to do with it? It's not perfect, so I'd only sell it to someone who held it and looked at it, although I really do think it's pretty. It's a big bead, 40mm tall. It's kind of heavy for a simple strand necklace, so I was thinking maybe three strands of something or other. Maybe some pearls? I like the soft colors, so was thinking pastel maybe. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would suggest giving it a good home, with someone who would cherish it and love it for what it is. It is beautiful, and large! I can give you a short list of names if you like. Diana (BG)

No, no, NO! Don't listen to Vicki!!!

I LOVE it and would give it a good home. Plus my 2 year old grandson would love it too. He plays with Nana's beads every time he comes over. A future lampworker? Only time will tell! :)

Send it to me!! I love it! And I'll wire it up with those fancy Hill tribe bead caps - it they fit - or with some Bali and then send it on to the person doing the auctions for Miki Robinson, another beader facing large medical bills after surgery and chemo for an aggressive uterine cancer. Here's the website:

Some of thepeople doing the auctions are longstanding customers of mine and I'm sendingsome of my extra stuff crowding the office to them for auctions. But if you've promised someone else, that's great - it's a definite nod toVan Gogh. I love his Sunflowers! Mj

Yup, yup, what Becki said! Sell it "pre-dressed" with some bead caps, explain that it got a little wonky during emergency procedures and go for it! It's absolutely beautiful!!!!!

Oooooooooo. I like the idea of a tassel or beaded tassel. Since this is a big bead, I think it would make a nice big neckalce. Usually, when I make a pendant bead, I just put bead caps and a crystal on the ends. And if I'm thinking of making something like a 3 strand necklace that would be kind of big, and I don't want to overpower the bead, so the tassel would balance it out.

I wonder if Hobby Lobby has beaded tassels. I've never made one.

There was a lady at the Holland school who made these BIG double wire wrapped pendant necklaces. They were huge, something I wouldn't have gone near with a 10 ft. pole years ago, but the were great. I'd wear something like that now!

Thanks all for the compliments and suggestions! It's nice to know, if I decide to orphan this bead, it has it's choice of good homes to go to ;) Right now, I'm thinking of doing something really Springy with it. Wrong time of year, I know. Putting necklaces together can be really difficult for me. I think I much prefer just making the beads.

I'd be happy to help you put necklaces together. I love that part -- I just don't make beads.

Not at all, Marjean. It's always good to know when others are in dire need. Just as it's always good to desire beautiful things.
