Maybe she meant schmootz, which sounds like schmaltz but has different vowels.

Or they might have thought chicken fat was gross, and started calling everything they thought was disgusting "Schmaltz".

I'll never know, because although I *think* I know who I got it from, I haven't seen her in years and years. Alyssa Isenstein - she was this tiny little thing, about 4'11", and last I saw she was a writer for Willamette Week.
