Happy Happy Joy Joy: New Toys - OT

I guess it's OT. LOL!

Anyway, I am on my way to go pick up my new camera, an Olympus C-5050. It's a far cry from my old, but trusty, Mavica FD-91. I'm sure I'll have an interesting and steep learning curve.

I just placed a $6,000 order with Wale Apparatus. My heart is still pounding! It's SO MUCH stuff, that it's all coming in a big truck. Prairieson will be taking the day off to help me unload and unpack things. It's exciting as heck, but scary too.

Full Bullseye order placed today: 1/2 pound of every color rod, plus full pounds of black, clear and white, and four pounds of Schott clear. Also 40 pounds of Schott clear cullet for my crucible kiln.

Tomorrow, the Glory Hole from Don McKinney.

I am SO freaked out.

Ohhh Tink, way cool!

I have the Olympus C-4000Z and LOVE it!!!!! Took it with me to the State Fair on Monday.....it's so cool to be able to shoot closeups of bunnies, indoor shots of sheep shearing, more indoor shots of harnessing the Budweiser Clydesdales, moving shots of DS on the bumper cars AND night shots of the giant ferris wheel, all with the same camera without changing major settings or film! And then to come home and shoot closeups of beads.

Sort of. I guess now I feel like I really have to 'deliver', you know? I have to submit a monthly profit and loss statement, and I'm so afraid that I won't sell anything, or that the muse will abandon me once again.

It's the most astounding opportunity, and I am unspeakably grateful and thrilled. But I'm one of those who constantly worries about disappointing people or letting them down. I'm trying to let go of that and just DO what I DO, you know? That's when the best stuff happens for me, artistically.

I'm sitting here staring at the box the new camera is in, and I'm having a hard time even opening it.

I guess this is another aspect of the "wait until they find out I'm a fraud" mentality that I've always wrestled with. To have someone put this much faith in me is, while encouraging, very scary.

Think of all that new stuff as evidence of the faith you have in yourself and your abilitys. Im so happy for you!!!! All those new toys to play with and to make your job better. This comes from me who felt the same way getting a serger ... I had to come to some terms with "deserving, needing, wanting" issues before I could go play with it and make it do stuff. Now, its a tool that Im happy to have. Its fun! Now, go forth and melt things! Diana

OMG, it's not just me???? Not to sound cocky, LOL, but every time things start improving and I get busy, it terrifies me. But usually something happens, then, to settle me down. Like last month my sales were so good, this month, blech! Or else I manage to sabotage myself somehow. Arrrgh!

Thank you, Tink, for saying this. Now, go forth and make beads, because you're NOT a fraud!!!!!!

beads or jewelry? (My LBS just bought one for $5000, for this purpose.) <

Whoa, 5K??? That would be a serious high-end camera! I would venture one line of reasoning....extremely high resolution for magazine or other print art. My 4MP camera is nice for my little bead pix that show on the web at 72 dpi, but for a full-page photo ad a detailed pic would appear fairly grainy.

Still, how many LBS's are putting full-page ads in Vogue? ;-)

For five thousand dollars, I could fly almost anywhere, and show you the beads in person. A $5,000 camera seems to be overkill, especially considering just how many beads I could buy with that kind of money.

Tink,

We know that you have it in you - and so do you- you just have to BELIEVE it. And just let it flow.

Look at me, for instance. I can do almost anything with a computer, but it took me over a year to get the courage to post even one picture of my beadwork online. Don't even ask about my painting -- I never show that to anyone. (I paint stylized animals on clothing and furniture)

I've worked in a male dominated job for twenty years, and definitely succeeded. (And obviously have no problem talking about it) Yet when it comes to more "female," artistic things, I feel like my skills suck and that I have no talent at all. When complimented, I always say "it's nothing," even when it wasn't nothing and took a whole lot of work and practice.

knowing what my camera can do (it was *not* $5K), it seemed insane to me......I mean, $5000?!? JEEZ!<

Good grief! LOL My Olympus is "only" 4 Megapixel (but has kickass super macro settings) and cost me $530 on Ebay with a BUNCH of extras.

I wonder if you'll be seeing price increases soon. :-(

I have a custom setting set up for my bead closeups. I'm using a version of the "ice cream diffuser" that Mark Wilson posted on WC. Basically a mutilated rubbermaid container sprayed with krylon matte stuff, and lit in various positions by a pair of small but VERY bright halogen desk lamps. I also use a rubbermaid-style bread box (more opaque, though) turned on its side with a piece of neutral gray craft foam (sold in sheets) taped to the back and bottom inside. I mess with the lights to get a good position, and use clear sticky squares to hold beads in position.

So, camera settings.....ISO 400 (if you have 800 use it), resolution SQ1 (1600x1200), super macro setting, white balance on auto, sharpness and contrast at 0, saturation at +2. Everything else is at original settings (I think). Oh, and I have the "reset on start" turned off, since I mostly use this custom setting. When the camera comes on, the only thing I have to adjust is the F-stop, which I increase to 5.6. That way you get a better depth of field. Depending on lighting, I sometimes bump it up to 6.3. I don't let the shutter speed go below 100 if I can help it...I rearrange the lighting to make it right.

Hope this helps!

Ok. This is some great info! So why not let the shutter speed go below 100?

Guess this once I will top-post.... :)

Also curious why you are using such a high ISO? That just introduces unnecessary noise into your photographs. Why not use a tripod and the timer feature? My Nikon 4300 has a timer, surely the Olympus does too. Then you get rock steady, clear pics no matter what.....

Because, just like a regular camera, any vibration will be picked up on the image. 60 may be acceptable, but the general rule is that if you're shooting any slower than 100 a tripod is recommended.
