Kathy, I hate to break it to you, but your hermaphrodite cat was
*retarded*.
Pardon the politically incorrect references in this story, but...
I used to have a retarded cat. His name was Retardo, and he used to like to stare at light bulbs from close proximity. He was a Rex, but only as part of the random genetic cocktail that made him also far, far below average cat intelligence... none of his (normal-intelligence) siblings were Rexes. His specialties included;
*Purring all the time
*Falling into the toilet
*Falling off of any horizontal surface
*Taking showers with us
*Staring at walls and light bulbs
I loved that cat, he was great.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that he never made it IN the litter box. Once his head was there, he figured his butt was too. We solved that problem by putting the litter box on a shallow tray with newspaper, and changing it every time he went.

Imagine any other place on Earth where this statement would be considered normal conversation. Think about it.
Grayfie had many retarded characteristics, but was also really, really smart in other ways. S/he could hunt like nobody's business, and bossed Buckie (the Cairn) unmercifully. For a cat that was perpetually stoned, s/he did very well for herself.
Unlike most cats, this cat thudded when she walked. We had a split level home at the time, and Grayfie often fell off the "upstairs" part of the house into the living room. It was really funny, and we put a cushion onto the landing area to make sure that cat didn't get hurt. Then the cat would lick himself as if to say, "I meant to do that."
Those behaviors sound familiar, except for the showers. Grayfie liked rain but not *indoor* water. But you forgot about toe sucking - stupid cat would try to nurse off our toes every time we went about barefoot.
Bob just walked by and I mentioned the possibility that his cat was retarded. He balked, then laughed, and then took me to task for making Gray's sexual eccentricities public. OTOH, he used to tell people that he could tell the cat to f*ck itself and the cat could do it. He also concedes that there is a slight possibility that Grayfie was kinda retarded.
Us too. Total pain in the neck at 4 a.m. (dontcha know, that's the best time to pet a cat? Just ask Gray), and my health is a lot better without a giant hairy cat around, but boy do we miss that beast. BTW, the cat was markedly bigger than Sophie - Gray topped out at about 20 lbs of pure muscle, compared to Sophie's 14 lbs of flub.
ROFL! The more you tell about him, the harder I'm laughing... visualizing a 20-lb grey cat falling into the living room from the loft... aahahahahahahahaheeeeee!
