kidney wires

Ages ago, an old roommate left behind a gross of kidney wires when she moved out. I'd assumed they were plated - and was about to donate them to charity - when I noticed they were tagged gold filled. I don't normally use them, but it seems like a good opportunity to use odds and ends beads to make some inexpensive earrings. I'm just wondering if those of you who are actively selling notice that customers have an objection to kidney wires.

TIA,

Personally, my objection to kidney wires is that they are usually are made of thinner wire and feel "sharp".

:^) Yeah, there's nothing like trying to dig that other earring out of the heap when you're in a hurry to get out of the house.

I prefer something a little heavier gauge, too, like french wires or leverbacks. But unless I hear a chorus of "NO!", I'll try it.

Have you done this, Christy? It doesn't make them brittle?

Yes, it's possible if yanked on, they could tear the ear. I would keep them simple with small dangles for that reason.

No, I don't have any. If I did have some, I would try it, though! I'm having fun smashing all kinds of gold and silver wire scraps and pieces to see how far I can take them and where it will go...

Yes. I had made a simple multicolored so it looks like African Trade Beads seed bead necklace with bali and wanted some matching earrings, but what cool thing can you do with seed beads, you know? So I took some sterling wire, made it into 2 question mark shapes about 1 1/2 inches each. Then i smashed them with a hammer against my little anvil until they looked like - you guessed it, hammered silver! Then I took some nice narrow copper wire and strung each section with seed beeds before wrapping them around the hammered silver - can you picture it? Anyway, voila! Some pretty cool, unique looking earrings. It's fun experimenting with all this stuff. I'm in a low budget learn-as-you-=go school. I want to cast, but I have to keep reading to find out temperatures and melting points and so on. For now, I'll hammer.

Wow, wish you had a picture of those earrings.

It is pretty easy to set up, and if you don't outgrow the allotted space, I think it is still free.
