More on the demo......

I just wanted to let you know that bringing my water to the demo was the BEST thing I did there. I was so thirsty, especially the first day, that I drank my water at least every 10 minutes. I was so grateful to have it there. So, thanks a bunch for that advice. I thought of you every time I took a drink!

I will not be doing the consignment. All the advice from this entire thread has been really helpful. Now, I just need to tell the owner this, which I plan on going over there today and getting it over with. I'm firm this time. My mind is made up that I don't want to do this, because I really don't and business is business.

You know...I've been beading for years. As many years as I've been with my boyfriend. But for some odd reason, everytime I show him a lampworked bead he always says "oh, so these are the glass blown beads?" And I say "No, these are not blown, they are wound around a piece of metal". He says "So they are blown glass." And I say" No they are LAMPWORKED beads, not blown glass beads." I've even shown him the difference when he comes with me to my LBS. He *still* doesn't get it. LOL! He understand polymer clay beads, but just can't get it straight about lampworked beads.

you are so welcome! I know it seems such a simple thing, but soooooooo important to the overall comfort!

and I am glad you won't be doing consignment; you really do deserve to be beyond that now. Sarajane

Hey Sooz (or anyone who gets this mag), I haven't seen the new Autumn issue yet---is my column any good??

And I'm told that I'll have my "Buttons to Beads and Back Again" Polymer Clay article in the Winter issue.

I think consignment is an arrangement that is not usually in the artist's best interests. Sarajane

sorry I didn't chime in on this before.

My opinion is if she is willing to buy at the same price you have on the Internet, then definitely go for it. You don't even have to give her first pick...put them on the internet, and if they don't sell within x amount of time, then put them in a tray for her (or similar).

Explain that you really don't wish to keep a full stock (i.e. *always* 20 beads or similar), but that you will bring buy an assortment when you stop by to visit, and that she can direct buy then.

If you have *just* made a batch, before taking pics/writing descriptions/etc, then drop by, and let her pick out whatever she wishes.

I think in this way, she gets some of her beads, sometimes you save a little work (photographing/etc), but shouldn't feel pressure in keeping a stock in the store. Who knows, because there's less, there might be a little more demand for them, and she can "command" higher prices for them...LOL!

This is all very good information....

I did go to the store today, but she didn't buy any beads for the store. Maybe she will in the future. You would think if she liked them that much and thinks they will sell, then she will buy some from me directly. I know she is new and is still building her stock in other, easier to come by, beads. She said we would talk further after the holidays...which seems great to me! Gives me a break.

can't tell you how many times I've been out while wearing one of my beads on a simple chain and been asked, "Ooh! That's pretty! Where did you get it?" "I made it". "No, I meant where did you get that bead?" "I made it. I melted the glass and formed it and decorated it with a torch." "Oh. Uh huh."> how weird - I have NEVER had that happen to me... Usually they ask and I say "I made it myself " and I get the "oh wow" response... LOL -- then they ask "how do you do that" - and I give them the short explanation and my card...

I get this with polymer clay too. The funniest time was at Embellishment on year, I was wearing a necklace of cobalt and butterscotch colored PC beads that had been in Bead &Button in a magazine article. A lady came up with her friend and grabbed me by the beads (people do that at bead shows, its not as bad as it sounds) and told her friend this was a glass bead necklace, beautiful glass beads. I said, "actually its polymer clay". She gave me a withering glance, said, "no it isn't, its glass, I saw it in a magazine" " I said "well, I made it out of polymer clay, and I wrote the article about how to do so--do read it when you get a chance." She still didnt really believe me! Sarajane
