Hi,,
I am new to this forum and I am looking for feedback on a new method of making jewelry that I have been developing for the past 2 year. I need advice on marketing, pricing etc. The method is very labor intensive. Thanks for looking.

Your site is down, but I suggest you read through this site and others like it:
Maybe if I could... Oh, I dunno... SEE the stuff you make!?
Christ on a cracker, I'm so freaking tired of people and their tiny jewelery pics. Why not just go all the way & snap some shots from an airplane window? I'm taking a trip this week, are you on the East coast? Lemme know and I'll get a few good shots.
And for the touch, the feel of cotton--put yer freakin' shirt on already! The pointless/random/attention starved topless-thing has been done. To death. I should know--I killed it personally, which is why I got to oficially declare it.

Wow, if this is the kind of nasty bitchy response you guys give to newbies then I guess I'm in the wrong place.
S> > Hi,,
Generally speaking we are a supportive and enthusiastic bunch. We just have a low tolerance for folks asking less than 'smart' questions. The website in question has either been offline or has had 'dead link' icons where the pictures should be. If a person wants us to look at their work and offer recommendations - we need to be able see the work. The two pictures I was able to see are not of sufficient detail to offer any sort of opinion on the quality or the style of work being solicited for opinion.

Here are some random thoughts.....
For marketing, you need to get rid of the geocities site, and set up a real site that looks professional. I don't think you'll get high prices if you stay on geocities - - just my 2 cents on that.
Secondly, you need to tell potential customers what they're getting. You need to state exactly what your jewelry is made of: Swarovski crystals? Czech crystals? Swarovski glass pearls? What kind of wire? Sterling silver? craft-store wire? sterling silver clasps? handmade clasps? etc. The better the ingredients, the higher the price you can ask.
Finally, your photos are way too small. People want detail - - especially for highly detailed work. I would put *ONLY ONE* shot of a model wearing a necklace & bracelet - - maybe at the top or bottom of the page - - just for looks; but you want the jewelry pieces to be really showcased with clear, good quality photos. Use thumbnails on the mainpage, though - - people hate to wait for large files to load on a homepage - - they'll get impatient and leave.

Yes, but how hard is it to tell someone that without being a cow about it? There was no need to be rude about it. If you guys would rather stick to your own then that's fine but don't treat people like inferior crap just because they have yet to learn the vast knowledge you guys already have. Either this is a chat group where people share ideas and learn form each other or this is an outlet for beaders to say "Look at me. I'm so much better than you."
Sorry I am feeling a little ranty today. I do realise you guys aren't all like this but I am wondering why it's tolerated when most of you seem to be lovely and polite.
Sophie
Sophie, I'm a newbie myself. If one asks polite questions one gets polite answers (even if they're not always _nice_ answers. I know I need a new camera, and I've been told so ). One shares and one is shared with.
Because one reads first and then one posts, and one doesn't barge in and says "I invented something new, now tell me how do I market, price and everything else this." I still don't know what's new about it, or even whether it's really new, or prices (price ideas) , materials, etc. Everybody has their own style and if somebody is afraid of their things getting copied they'd better not put it on the 'net in the first place.
- I mean, even if you sell it at a farmer's market somebody might buy a piece and copy that. Might as well share what this is about.
(I haven't had any problems accessing links and pictures, but the pictures still don't have enough detail - I know, I should talk, but see above, and I hope to get a new camera for Christmas ...)

Hi Sophie
I think it comes down to us all being human and sometimes as humans its hard to consciously turn on the filters and we type what we think without them. I am *not* making a judgment or saying anything is right or wrong... but not every day or every post is lovely or polite.
Having said that... I also have to say this *IS* a very supportive group... with a lot of sharing and a lot of opportunities to give and take. And, yes, a lot of "Look at me, look at what I did!!!", and rightly so! But I don't believe that anyone here posts or acts as if they feel they are better than anyone else. I jokingly call myself 'just a stringer' and am frequently stunned and awed by the work of others, but have never EVER felt less than *anyone* here.
I hope you are able to put away any hard feelings and hang around. You probably have a lot to offer and there is a lot of support, feedback and suggestions... to take with you, if you will... and a lot of wonderful people. In fact, everyone here is quite remarkable, in a lot of different ways!
take care
I like how you take one reply and attribute it to EVERYONE on the newsgroup. Why not address your comments to that one person? Or do you seriously think we are all the same person?
You're not addressing the ONE person who you are offended by, but instead are demanding to know why no one else is either?
If you want to be the RCB politeness police, go ahead. I d> Yes, but how hard is it to tell someone that without being a cow about it?
The pieces look lovely but it's hard to see detail. What's new about the method you're using? Perhaps you can elaborate, and hopefully post bigger/detail pics.
Your model is lovely as well. Is that you?

Also, please do remember that you are asking your competition here for answers to questions that you really do need to do homework on yourself. Pricing and marketing are highly personal things - if you want advice, it's best to stick around, post, get to know people first. And let them get to know you. You'll find it easier to get advice that way.
Gosh I was in a bad mood wasn't I? I'm sorry. I guess as a newbie, (and not really sure whether this is the place for me and whether there really was anything I could contribute), it was upsetting for me to see particular responses to this other person. I'm still not sure I have anything to contribute so I probably won't hang around. All I can say is that people aren't always as they appear and surely (despite people's obvious lack of experience) I would of thought that people would be patient and polite and tolerate it to a certain extent, rather than openly critise them like they weren't even there. (Yes, I am only thinking about one particular person and I could have responded directly to her but I was curious as to how other people felt about it).
I think it's great that people share what they are doing with everyone else. There are some beautiful pieces being made by people here. I wish you all the best, but I don't think this is the right place for me. I have never been on a chat group before and I am finding this one way too intimidating. Maybe I am just not ready.
Sophie
Not at all! :) You should hang around - you'll find that you have a lot in common with the people here. Most assuredly, a love for beads of all kinds! Don't be intimidated - please - there are all levels of beaders here, as well as some people who love to collect or make beads. If anything, reading the ads is fun. Also, you will find that there are some very smart and savvy people here who you can learn some invaluable things from. Being an active poster and reader in a group like this can really help business-wise, because not only does it get your name out there, it familiarizes you with the bead community. I think it's really in your best interest to stick around and let us get to know you! And take some close-ups of those beaded pieces on your site - I would love to see them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~ HEY. No one called YOU any names. But it's okay for you to hurl insults at us?
This newsgroup has gotten "How do I market my work?" requests so many millions of times it would make you sick, too, if you'd been here and heard them all.
Newbies come in, don't even introduce themselves personally, and want all our hard-won secrets of success. That's ridiculous!!!! Why should we do your work FOR YOU, for one thing? And you didn't even bother to get to know anyone first, so why should we even care?
You were rude, according to netiquette, to come riding in here on your jewelry-horse and ask us to share stuff we've all worked hard to learn on our own. You want to share? You need to become part of the group FIRST, become a friend, a member of this community. You need to stick around and learn, instead of just asking for all our goodies like a greedy child.
You have NO sense of manners or group behavior, nor do you have any business sense, if you think you can simply ask your competitors (WE make jewelry and sell it TOO!) how you can take customers away from us.
Duh.
then I guess I'm in the wrong place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sophie -- let me explain it to you:
It's like Burger King walking into MacDonald's and asking, "How can I get your customers to come over and eat MY burgers instead? How do I do that -- in detail?"
~~~~~~~~~~~ Because you were rude to ask the way you did.
been on a chat group before and I am finding this one way too intimidating. Maybe I am just not ready. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Then my suggestion would be to read, and not post, til you feel ready.
There are many ways to take advantage of/be part of a group like this. Maybe you're not ready to post a lot yet. Maybe next month you WILL be. There's no need to just quit, unless that's what you are -- a quitter. Sheesh, people get upset on RCB every month! We're only human. A lot of people here are very close in real life as well as on the group -- I've had countless people here stay at my house, and one person even moved in for a while. Things don't stay sweet and perfect when you have strong personalities who know each other well, all in one place.
And the OP -- barging in here asking for all our business experience, even though we don't know her and she's our competition -- has crossed a line that is obvious and visible if you've been on RCB a while. She rubbed us REALLY the wrong way, and it's been done before (many times by others). She was very rude to do it.
I thought the same thing about the model. I can't see the jewelry very well, but if I look as good as she does wearing the pieces, I'm interested.
Detail shots are better, and welcome to the group.
