New Online Shop...

I have opened a new shop on the internet for those of you that are into lampwork jewelry. Right now its rather plain just containing a shop in which I sell my work but in the near future I plan on including instructions on designing your own lampwork jewelry etc. as the site expands... My son the computer knowledged one currently runs the site for me... You can visit it at

I'm finding this to load very, very slowly. The bracelets page took 3 minutes.

Please put AD in the subject line when you advertise your goods like this.

Before buying your merchandise I'd want to know what materials are used.

Hang around and you'll hear a lot of good information.

that's the problem with the "computer knowledgeable" they put too much garbage into a webpage. MOST CUSTOMERS won't wait that long to get into a website (i.e. your opening) - they will hit NEXT ....and move on. Despite the "coolness" of such stuff - most people find it an annoying waste of time... beyond that - good luck....

Thanks for some of the feedback... Look for changes in the next 24 hours... Did the store itself work fairly efficiently? Its supposed to be one of the litest commerce shops availible that dosnt have much overhead... I resized the imaged to between 3-5k in size to reduce load time... Im also on cable and have designed websites for years I think I may have miscalled the need for a flash intro for this page... Thank you and please continue the feedback...

I did not wait for it to download. Takes too long for people paying for connection by the minute. Shirley

Made some major changes based on your suggestions... Reduced images sizes and I checked to make sure it took affect this time :-)... And I removed the flash intro and added something that isnt real impressive but will load fast...

Site seems to be loading quite quickly now. I see you're using OSCommerce - what do you think of it so far? I just started putting my own cart together and haven't gotten too far yet (baby at home!).

Much better solution - eventually you will find the "right" photo for the main page - some really stunning piece of jewelry. You might add a frame around it - and a background to the page to spruce it up a tad... pick a fancy font for the website name...etc.

S&H is always a sensitive issue when selling jewelry, but $6 per ITEM for postage and insurance seems a little high, especially for a $12 pair of earrings. Most sellers charge less per item and will combine multiple items so your buyer can save on S&H.

Also most buyers want more detail about materials used for each item, and if lampworked beads are used, we want to know WHO made them (assuming they aren't India lampwork).

One more suggestion - use a white background for your pics.

This brings something up.

When I state the cost of a bead (eg), I givee it as the cost of acquiring it. Not the price the seller asks, but the price and S&H. And with a per item charge without combining postage, I'd sure be tempted to ask you to send each item seperately.

He used to sell on JustBeads and probably sells on eBay. I used to have his website bookmarked but it's a goner.

Yes, you will see a change in shipping prices and the addition of further details within the next 24hrs... Takes me a little time to get in touch with my mom since Im at school 2.5 hrs away from where she is... I have a list of details for most of the items and I will be adding them well, hopefully today...

I have made the S&H change to $3.00 p/item which seems a little more standard... Does that sound about right?

Not bad - remember, though, that you can ship up to 1 pound worth of goods via priority mail for $3.85 AND you can get priority mail shipping supplies for free. The time it takes to mail something out can be figured into your overhead, not your s/h prices. FWIW, I'd charge $3.85, combine items and offer free delivery confirmation (which is available when you print priority mail labels off the USPS website for free).

We are looking at combined pricing... To tell you the truth with the prices she gave me, Im not sure that they are not already combined... She figured up the prices, I have to ask her.... Ill keep y'all informed... And BTW you all have been the most helpful group out there, I cant thank you enough :-)

Could you give some more info on this? TIA

Almost everyone you ask will probably have a different way of figuring S&H. I usually charge $2.75 initially for an auction win, and will combine several more items (depending on size & weight) for that charge which includes the cost of a bubble envelope. After about 4 items or so (I usually sell bead kits when tend to be bulkier and heavier), I upgrade to Priority - based on total weight plus about $1 for packing and the associated expenses of mailing, as the Priority boxes/envelopes are provided at no extra charge by the USPO.

I also give my customers the option of paying the extra $$ for Priority and/or Insurance up front, even for one item. Some people prefer Priority and/or Insurance even for a small item. So I give them the choice.

Since my website is a PayPal shopping cart, it's a little more difficult to add in postage. PayPal only has 2 options - either a $ amount per item or a % of total sales. % of total sales doesn't seem to have a relationship to actual S&H cost - which is generally based on weight. So I usually charge a set rate - typically $1 per item - unless the item is unusually large or heavy. If a customer buys 4+ items I automatically upgrade the shipping to Priority. Sometimes I lose $$ this way, but I think it evens out in the long run.

You seem to be a very nice young man and your mom is blessed to have your help. You are also very open to suggestions... which is refreshing! Best wishes for the success of your mom's online business.
