OT: Anne McCaffrey's Pern

I just started reading this seires, and it's great! (so far, I'm just over 1/3 of the way through the second book!) I reccomend this to anyone who like Fantasy. (my fave genre... heck, I'm even working on writing a fantasy story, too... it's going really slowly though... I get maybe 2-3 pages written in a week...)

Umm, anywho, i'm finished rambling now! ^_^

Wow, cool you just discovered it. I found it in the mid-70's when there were only two books out. Lucky you to have so many available at will!

I have the whole series to date (in paperback)! I check the bookstores every couple of months to see if there are any more of her books out, also to check for Tery Pratchett PB's.

Now I'm a little jealous! You've met her Ladyship!?!

I've read them all. ;-) It is a fun bunch of books. Some of her descriptions color my ideas for my dragon sculptures (as well as the sea serpents in "The Liveship Traders" by Robin Hobb).

She goes to cons -- and she doesn't hide in the corners like some authors do, either. She has *one* rule: no autographs except during the official autograph sessions. This allows her to wander around the con and chat with people, or (more likely) to establish herself on a sofa, somewhere in plain sight, and let people come to her. I've had the good fortune to encounter her at two or three cons.

Most of the cons occur overseas from me though, which makes it very difficult and expensive to get to. I wish they held some in Oz occasionally, I might then be able to met these people!

I've read *The Ship Who Sang* and maybe one other of her scifi books.

*The Ship Who Sang* was the first book of hers I ever read, and now I'm reading every one I can find! ^_^

Yeah, especially since the earlier books have been reprinted lately! My copy (copies?) of books 1 and 3 are both used, but the second one I bought new. I'm getting tired of staring at my computer screen now, so I think I'll go read *Dragonquest*! ^_^

But yeah, there don't seem to be many down there. I also found 2 gaming-cons and something that seemed to be a pop-culture con, but I don't think those are what you're looking for.

I hate to disappoint you, but McCaffrey says it's SF (and proves so in later books). I like the PERN books -- I reread them when I want something that won't involve my brain.

One of my SF favorites, hard to find these days, is Restoree. I also liked the Crystal Singer/Killishandra series, and just finished the Pegasus series (I'd read To Ride Pegasus when it first came out ages ago). Pegasus is cool because it's a lead-in to the Rowan and "Ship Who" books, tech-wise.

Nope, Crystal Singer books are by the same Anne McCaffrey. I wanted to name my cat Killashandra...sigh...

I've met her on email before too - I used to run a fan site for her books before she developed her own website. She's such a nice lady. I wish I could meet her, but she's getting too frail to travel to America (she said this awhile back). I have never been to a con, though - sounds like fun! :)

Actually, the Pern books are a perfect example of the grey area between SF and fantasy. The *early* books are unmistakably fantasy, though the introduction provides an SF gloss (similar to Stasheff's "Warlock" series); it's only later on that she moves them unequivocally into the SF range.

Ok, you sci-fi reading beaders. Got a question for you. Read a series when I was a teenager. It was about Flux and Anchor. Ring any bells? Can't remember the author(s) but do remember it was a decent series (this is what comes from reading WAY too much) Got them from my brother and didn't keep them because 1) I don't keep books (I'd have a couple thousand if I did) and

2) they were salt encrusted from being on the fishing boat. Would like to re-read if possible and see if any more were written.

TIA
