OT: Strange New Dog Behavior

Since we're talking dogs, Sophie has developed a strange new behavior that has me puzzled. I wonder if any of you have any insight into this, although I'm not concerned about stopping the behavior, since it doesn't really bother me.

As most of you know, Sophie the Wonder Dog is a rescued Cairn Terrier (same breed as Toto) with a past history of abuse. We've had her for 9.5 years, and she'll be ten years old last week. Unlike most Cairns, she's a fearful little girl. She's also totally attached to me, sometimes too much so.

Lately, she's started touching me with her nose when she finds me. If I go in the other room, or God Forbid, leave the house; I get a little wet nose touching my legs or hand when I return. I don't really mind, but I swear that the dog snorts Freon. That nose is cold! Definitely puts a spring in the step on one of those middle of the night bathroom visits.

Anyone else have this experience? I've had dogs all my life, and none have ever done this. OTOH, none of my other dogs ate fruit or tried to frighten off the furniture before, either.

Sophie's mouth is always open. She had a partially healed broken jaw when we got her, and the vet said that setting it correctly would require re-breaking it. (and she was enough of a wreck as it was that we didn't want to subject her to more trauma she'd never understand) Her mouth never closes completely.

I'll also have the vet check her eyesight. Now that she's no longer a pup, she might be having some sensory input problems. Her hearing is still more than fine, she can hear a cheese wrapper from a mile away.

I've read about dogs who smell cancer. If your dog starts nibbling (little bites) some part of you, maybe it's *you* who should go to check yourself? There's been several incidents where loyal dog has started first licking and then, when nothing has been done, biting for example a hand. After doc's appointment there's been found a small cancer.

Just a thought,

This is the first thing that came to my mind, too. That she wasn't seeing as well as she used to, and was using another sense to confirm the answer to the "Who is this?" question.

Interesting. Maybe they need to start involving specially trained dogs in the diagnostic process... like canine drug-sniffers and explosives-detectors.

Whereas the loyal cat couldn't care less as the human has another hand with which to feed them.

Buddy nudges us with his nose all the time. Chelsea used to do that to.

I'm assuming Sophie is ok, other than that? Maybe its a new way of telling you she loves you.

See what you did ! i was laughing and you made me send the html !!!!!!!!! i feed all the stray animals near me. they are not dogs. I have cats, but they are just as od. I do not hang out on my patio in summer. Too dam hot ! But today i was designing some theatrical propa outside. The cats hate everyone. They are feral. I have an indoor love bug cat named Misu. He loves me. I can tell. If you try to touch the outside cats that are lick and quick, till this morning. I was standing at a table, and cats who would barely look at me before, began to rub my legs. Not skittishly, either, like they were trying to clean some unseen sticky bits off their whiskers !!! Geez, I could hardly work ! Rainbow

My Henry used to do this, but he did it all his life, so it was just part of his "routine". I used to yelp "NO SNOUTING! UGH!" when he ran up to me, but to no avail.

Penny will sneak up behind me and touch my calves with her nose. EEK! I think she thinks the freaking out is funny.

EW KITTY NOSES! SNEAKING UP! I can completely see why it drives him bonkers... and, from the point of view of the cats, why they keep doing it.
