I use these charms that people like that are rather cheaply made metal. I would like to know if there is a way to keep them from 'turning black.' Someone told me to spray them with a light coat of polyurethane.
Will spraying with a light coat of polyurethane work?
If so, can I spray it will a light coat of silver shine first as well?

Thank you. I just found out that the charms are silver plated - the company just upgraded them so I'm not going to worry about it.....
Now what the heck is nickel free, rhodium plated? One company is telling me that it is less likely to turn than silver plated. and that it has a more platinum look? Anyone know?

Nickel is something quite a few people are allergic to (my mother is one of them), so it's of some importance to make sure that the plating is nickel free as well. If you go for un-plated pewter you may be better off than with silver plated pewter as allergies go.

He can tell you exactly what Rhodium is, why its used, etc.... but all in all, having a rhodium plated silver piece means that the piece WONT tarnish. Rhodium is extremely corrosive resistant and unreactive, so it does not tarnish like silver.
