I forgot that I collect cookbooks! How could I forget that? I guess it's just something so natural and a part of me that I don't even notice though my husband certainly does.

Aula, It's not being depraved. I think of it more as trying to keep life as simple and uncluttered as possible. It's too easy to keep collecting things...harder to get rid of them.
Besides the obvious beads, I have a small collection of cook books, Precious Moments Christmas ornaments and Isabel Bloom sculptures (see

Heh. "She who dies with the most fabric... is dead, when's the estate sale?"

Karen, it's something to do with the chemicals they use to prepare the fabrics....i can't escape it either.
Both the Professor and I used to collect book and had an apartment chock full. Himself had a sizeable collection of new and vintage books on military history, and I had a hefty collection of Sci-Fi, fantasy, and crafts books.
It was quite a wrench to leave most of them behind, or throw away the books we tried to salvage, but were too wet to save. :-(
Of course, the books have begun to pile up again, but it will never be the same.

Thank the gods for used book stores! We have a wonderful one here called Bookman's that takes not only books, but records (vinyl), cassettes and CD's, video games and software. The kids and I took 4 boxes over yesterday, they rejected 1 box worth (they get to choose what they'll take). We got almost $200 in store credit and trotted out with a few "new" books, including a nice one on lapidary projects. AND some vintage science fiction that I'd heard about but never read (Alexei Panshin for anyone who cares). Fun day! I took the remainders over to the library.

Unfortunately, we didn't have much choice about "getting rid" of our books.
Our apartment building was involved in a large fire. We lost nearly everything, whether we wanted it or not. It will be 5 years ago as of March 10.
I go through this every year: I want my stuff back. :-(

Well... if you define "collection" as a compilation of "stuff" with no other use except as something to compile and/or dust occasionally....
Kokeshi Daruma (some of which are kokeshi) Maneki-neko Asian New Year icons (12 animals, 7 gods, etc). Okinawan "shi-shi dogs", when I can find them.... Paperweights (glass globe type)
Beads (and other craft items) and books don't count as "collections" because they have at least POTENTIAL "uses". Unless you are like Jamey Allen, and have a "real" bead collection (neatly organized, catagorized and labeled....). Most of us have beads that we intend to "do" something with, someday, even if a whole lot of them are merely fondeled from time to time as we dream.... Kaytee "Simplexities" on
I feel your pain. I too had a house fire. But that was almost ten years ago, and I've got the house all filled up again. This time with the help of another aquisition of 3 years ago -- my Pete.
Fortunately, most of my art was under glass, and most of my beads could be cleaned from the fire damage, and my photos were in albums which the smake and heat couldn't penetrate. I still have some books that were damaged in the garage.

On March 10, 1983, my car was run over by a speeding eighteen wheeled truck. Unfortunately, I was in it at the time. I got to spend about a year in the hospital getting my bad self put back together, and had nine operations to reconstruct my face. I lost the sight in one eye, and have medical complications to this day.
I go through a tough March 10 every year, too.

All of my crafting supplies were destroyed, as was my collection of lithographs (SF and fantasy subjects, all signed by the artists). Not much of my own art work survived -- a couple of wall quilts that didn't suffer too much smoke damage. Everything else was smashed by the pressure of the fire hoses or buried under the debrise of the collapsed ceiling. My craft cabinet simply exploded and the contents scattered into the schmutz. My mother's rocking chair was picked up and blown across the livingroom....
I'm not normally a violent person, but I'd cheerfully strangle the moron who started the fire. If the fire had been my fault, I'd just suck it up and move on, but being the victim of someone else's stupidity really chaps my butt.
Goddess help me stay calm. I'll just shut up now.

And, here I was just whining. March 10 is the Festival of Life in the Cracks. I guess we've both fallen into one, heh?

Hey, I forgot aprons, old marbles, and rocks.
Is that why I keep buying fabric when I haven't had time to sew in four years?
Also, yarn. Egads I have a lot of yarn!
