which is one reason i do so much snipping. but whatever works for you.

And a second friendly reminder: if you *do* top-post, PLEASE snip! It's really annoying to see strings of 200-line-plus posts where each one is 2 sentences added to the one before. People who have dial-up connections (especially those overseas, where online charges are typically by-the-minute!) can be adversely affected by having to download all that repeating stuff.

Yes, but it's counter-intuitive for following a conversation -- and people WILL not snip, which is really annoying.

Then there's me. I bottom post, after snipping. It's easier for me to follow a conversation this way. The part that came first (the part that tells me what was being discussed) is at the top. Not all of it, just enough that you can put it in a proper frame of reference. Then I type in my two cents worth. Barbara Dream Master

In Ye Olden Dayes of Internet, it was general ettiquette that all replies were placed below quoted material. Things are changing, and many newsreaders allow (or force) you to write your reply before the quoted material. I prefer top-posting, with a snippet of quote below; but then, my newsreader threads replis so they're always in context.

But it won't let me top-post.

Hear, hear. The top/bottom posting argument is as old as USENET itself and, as far as I know, has never been satisfactorily concluded. I swore I wouldn't post in this thread for just this reason, but I do have to echo your sentiment above :)

Personally, I tend to post however I please, which is differently on different days or for different posts, and if someone else wants to get worked up over it, it's *totally* not my problem.

Also for Sooz-- if you're reading through aol, that can be cumbersome in the extreme, too. I never knew that until I started using OE, but aol is a whole different animal when it comes to newsgroups. If you have your headers turned on, you can try turning them off, or putting them at the bottom. That may give you more space on your screen for the text of the conversation.

I keep my window about 6 lines deep. Its just my preference, and scrolling isnt a big deal to me now with a scrolly wheel on my mouse. I think the new ettiquette is to snip to keep things in context, top post if possible.. There are some usenet groups that are death on topposting/posters. I say there are more important things to get worked up over. As long as the original text is included but snipped its not hard to scroll around to the new message. There are some peoples posts I will scroll miles to get to, other just dont seem worth the effort. Yours are fine Vicki! Diana

Y'all can just hit the spacebar if you're using OE... click on the message you want to read, hit the spacebar and it will take you to the bottom of your screen. More of the same message to read after doing that? Hit the spacebar again.

And if you're already at the bottom of the message and finished reading it, if you hit the spacebar again, it'll take you to the next message, read or unread. No need for scrolling.

This wasn't meant as a jab at aol or aol'ers, 'cause I used that for many years and it gets the job done, and I despise that kind of anti this-or-that, "aol sucks" kind of crap. I was just sharing my experiences with it.

I didn't think it was cumbersome either until I went to Outlook Express and got used to that. I think everyone gets used to whatever it is they use, which is fine-- but with OE, if I want to see the whole message I just double click the subject line and a big window comes up. No scrolling is usually needed. The message I'm replying to is automatically quoted in the reply, so I don't have to highlight and quote things separately. Stuff like that I find I miss a lot when I try to go back.
