Re: OT: Old Sewing Machine Advice

I'll take a few pitcture tomorrow and post a URL so you

>can see the machine, but if you old machine junkies can be running >this through your mind in the meantime I'd appreciate it.

Lucky you! I probably could help you with the threading and reverse too. I have an old 50's Singer from my dh's grandma. It may not be fancy but it sure does work consistently.

The first time I used it I found that the flat side of the needle doesn't face the machine (right) but faces me. Also there's a lever for stitch length, this lever when pushed up while sewing does the reverse stitch. I know it's not a White but you never know...

I have an 80s Singer. That's 1880s. The biggest problem I have with it is the tension. It has a couple convext discs, and I simply have to play with them until I can use it.

I have one from 1910...and i love it. It sews like a dream. It's DD's sewing machine, while she lives at home. I figure, it's lasted this long, it'll outlast me or her!

Just give it a regular tune up every year, and keep it clean, and check the parts for wear, and you'll do fine. Mine has all new electrical wiring, because the old wiring was, well, old. LOL. I do have to replace the lamp, but you know, if you were

90+ years old, you might need new parts, too! HEHEHE The only thing i can't figure out is why the heck would they consider this thing i have "portable" since it weighs nearly 30 pounds.

You're right, mine is due for check up. I have a fairy costume to make very soon!

They call it a portable because it doesn't weigh 60lbs!

And because it's not a piece of furniture, as they all used to be.

Thanks! It's close enough to mine to provide me with some insight.
