semi-ad(?): HandcraftedJewelry.com

I signed up with handcraftedjewelry.com about 1 month ago. It has been around for a bit, but it does need some umph to get going. Both sellers and advertising.

But what I was going to ask, is if people could go and look around. If you can sign up (no obligation) then I can get $1 credit to use back towards putting more items up!!!

He has it set up so that the service is free to use. You can list an item for 180 days free of charge with 1 picture. THEN, he has other items...if you want it featured on the home page. If you want multiple pictures, if you want it highlighted. The only selling fee is at the end, there's a 5% charge.

This would be good for those who have no website. Or for another advertising spot for your items (if you have them on your website, then post them here, also. The worst that can happen is that you sell them on your website, and you have to remember to remove them from hj!

*AND*, he is setting it up with more categories. He now has a category for beads, and one for findings and gemstones. Under beads, he has subdivided it into lampwork, polymer clay, swarovski, etc....So it could work for those of you who don't list your beads on eBay, you can put them on HandcraftedJewelry.com and on your site.

He has it set up so that you can accept multiple forms of payment. Not just paypal.

If we can get some established people on there, with their clientele visiting, I think we can make this work!!!

So, if you wish to visit, here's the link:

This link will get me that little credit, so that I can use the spoofy services, if you sign up. Signup is no obligation, it's as a buyer, a seller, or as a browser. Okay, enough blabbing...I hope that this helps people!!! Thanks, everyone! Mary

I could be wrong, I am still checking on it, but the way that it says is when you click on my link, and you sign up with 9999 days, then I get the credit. So I don't think it's in reference to a promo code. A cookie, perhaps?

Looks interesting. However, it does not offer a secure page to enter your credit card information, neither on initial registration nor after you have registered and go to update your info. Therefore I can't sell anything there, since I won't send my cc info on an insecure site. I went through your link, but there was no mention of giving any credit to anyone, so I hope you got it!

I don't think it's a cookie. As I was filling out the required info there was a box to enter a promo code into. Just wondered if that's how you would be getting your credit. I didn't finish filling everything out, wanted to be sure you'd get it.

I just saw, I got the credit from you, Karin, and 3 other people. Thanks for signing up, I really appreciate it!!!

as far as selling there, is there any way you can email Blaine, and ask him if you can call him to give the information? And with payment...can you make the payment with paypal? I don't accept c/c, just paypal. I think I sent my information through that. I think you can set it up so that you can accept cash/check/money order, so maybe you can have a "for credit card, email me for instructions"???

Well, at the very least, the website owner needs to offer a secure server if he is asking you to register with your credit card. It's an easy thing to set up, and doesn't cost much these days. It's really hard for me to trust a site that does not have a secure server for credit card information - especially with all the theft and fraud going on!

I've been in contact with Blaine (very nice guy, btw) and he's looking into it. He also says you can do everything with paypal - apparently they just a)changed servers and b)added the credit card option, so this appears to have fallen through the cracks somehow.

You got that right! I'd NEVER give my details like that over an unsecured site.. Good on you Kandice for looking..

I understand, and have been passing on the comments to the owner of the site. I know he's open to *all* suggestions, and this one is *VERY* important!

Thank you!!! He is a *VERY* nice guy!!! Has a very great sense of humor! And he has taken my suggestions, and has implemented some of them (i.e. the bead sub-categories!)

Well, PayPal is all well and good, but seriously, some people don't like PayPal and won't use it. It alienates customers to limit options like that. For what it's worth, I use PayPal as well, but I consider it a trust issue - if the website owner refuses to use a secure server, that makes me think something's fishy. Especially for a site that's going to try and serve a great number of people, like an auction site. I am glad to hear he's looking into it.

He says: " I am actually waiting on my hosting company to tell me what the url for the secure server is."

In the second letter, he wrote: I appreciate the feedback. With so much going on there are basic things I miss. I turned off the credit card form until I get the security info from the hosting company. I would have thought people would be more comfortable with paypal but it appears several people want to use their credit cards."

So it looks like he is working on it. With feedback, we can help him, and get this thing rolling!

To tie in with the pricing threads, it's certainly interesting to see how various artists are pricing their wares on the site!

it seems to me the usual...some a little low, some "average" and I don't wanna say "high"...but if they can get the price, great!

Just an FYI... a secure certificate doesn't in any way change or increase the actual security of a site. What it is, is a form of extortion... absolutely the *only* thing a secure certificate does is prevent the little pop-up that says "you are now entering an unsecure server. Your information may be seen by others".

So, we with websites cheerfully pay out $75 so as not to frighten away out customers. It's exactly the same thing as "gee, this is a pretty little shop you have here, sure would be a shame if it burned down" except we pay money to stop them from telling our customers that we're leaking their credit card information far and wide.

Lovely little scam, isn't it? I would appreciate the service if it did

*anything* to actually protect your information, but it doesn't.

according to david:

it does make a difference. it insures that the information being passed is encrypted both ways. so it can't be interrupted in passage. it doesn't guarantee what happens to it on the other end, no.
