State Fair this weekend

Yup, Alaska. Because of the distances here we have "state fairs" in several locations. They are pretty local affairs, with the low populations we have here. There are less than a million people in the whole state -- which is 3 times the size of Texas.

PoRRo's post with a link to her site reminds my of what else I like at the rock booth at the fair. I have gotten several fossils there, including mammoth tooth, mastadon tooth, ammonite, chitons.

If she has a small fossil, I'd like to make a mold of it for PMC.

State Fair food is the best. If the weather's not too terribly hot, I am going to try and drag Ken to ours. I have no idea when it is, but I am sure I will hear about it.

Sounds like fun!! Especially the rock booth. I may check out the NC Mtn State Fair this year.

I suspect a fair number of the show animals end up either pets or breeding stock.

But to respond to your point -- eventually, something eats us... if we haven't been embalmed and thus turned into toxic waste.

Actually, even vegetables experience measurable 'distress' when they are plucked, uprooted, chopped, etc.

Life continues by the process of consuming and being consumed -- transforming one thing into another...

We've got a couple booths at our fair that has the deep fried twinkies, candy bars, pickles, cheesecake. Its called "Deep Fried Whatever". I've had the deep fried pickles years ago and they are yummy. This year I paid $3 for a deep fried snickers bar and it was really good. $3 seemed excessive for a 50 cent candybar but... well, its chocolate. Basically the candy bar just melts inside of the fried batter. Deep fried twinkies, well, that just doesn't do much for me. The "cheesecake" looked as if it was wrapped up in a flower shell.

Yep. Can't eat anything that has a name.... So sayeth my father. All his "girls" have names, so they still run around when they're old biddies... unless a coyote, or raptor, gets them.... (He does eat chicken-- just not HIS chickens.)

This is something friends of my parents who retired to a small tree farm in NH with a little livestock did.

They would swap their live, non-laying birds for a neighbor's 'ready for the table' birds. They were willing to eat chickens, just not the ones they 'knew'.
