It might not have a very good origin, but in the manner it's used today, it's an extremely useful phrase. Perhaps it's the linguist in me, but reducing the concept of "to create something functional from parts, the result of which has nothing to do with the original intended design of those parts" down to three syllables is interesting.

Yep, I've heard that one. It usually means doing something half-assed, though, from the old Mickey Mouse cartoons where he was always doing things in a way that required the least possible labor.

I think half of everything in my life is jury-rigged. :) I am the chick formerly referred to at work as "The Fix-It Bitch" because I could fix anything with a gum wrapper and a pocketknife. Also occasionally called "MacGuyver" for the same reason.

And then if you want to be completely NON PC there's a phrase that has been cleaned up to "afro-engineered"

Why do you all take so much offense at words? It's when you LET them bother you that they bother you. Thick skin is a GOOD thing!!!

Shaking my (young to most of you) head and wondering when things swung so far the other way.

Yes, still here and still waiting for #6.

My improv would have to be my beading light on my rigged up desk (you'd have to see pics to understand) It was DH's corner computer desk until we moved and he didn't tie it on the car tight enough. It's good from the table top up but underneath is improv-ed. Wine/juice bottles on each side, a broom handle held by strips of folded paper, a cheap clamp-on shop light over the middle of the desk and a 100 watt reveal light bulb.

It seems that so many people are getting so PC these days that one can barely speak for fear of offending someone else. And there are so many "facts" floating about that are anything but. But they get quoted so much that people accept them as truth without question. Question authority! and everything else too......... I've seen the phrase "jury-rigged" in books from the late 1800's. I think I've mentioned this one before, but if I didn't......I use a piece of large wooden dowel or 1" x 1" wood and screw lots of cup hooks into it. Then I hang it near my work area. I suspend coils of wire, etc from each of the hooks. It makes each individual thing accessible by itself. Barbara Dream Master

Too be quite honest..words are just words to me..used in a time and a place to get a particular meaning across. I have no problem with any word I've ever come across, and can always find another to use if the one I have isn't working the way I intended. I do no deliberately try to offend anyone, and will choose different words when possible to avoid that very thing. But, like I said, words are just words. It's how one chooses to view them that matters.
