My first machine

This is my first time here - I am getting ready to purchase an embroidery machine. I would like to know what the most popular machine is for this NG. I am buying for personal use (primarily) but will do some for the public also - single head is plenty. I don't want to be outdated before the machine arrives, so I am willing to pay for newest technology. Isn't a 'dedicated' embroidery machine better than a sewing/embroidery? All advice appreciated.

get one that just sews and one that just embroiders.

a Brother or babylock that sews a 5x7 field or larger for embroidery and if you do quilts, clothing, etc. a Pfaff with the dual feed. That would save you a couple of thousand. And you can use both at once then. I got a real high end bernina2 years ago:180 with extra feet, etc. the embroidery is fine but has been in shop for everything else more than I sew, tension, computer, just a real pain. hubby got me a pfaff (low end with dual feed) and I use it all the time. Have an of older brother, 7500, that still works great for the embroidery on a 4x4 field and sews regularly just fine. Guess I am saying that I am really pleased with Brother (Babylock) and the Pfaff but am very disapointed with the $5,000 Bernina, a very expensive mistake! Also Bernina has special software, the feet are more expensive and do not fit other machines, etc. etc.

I second that! I have a sewing/embroidery machine. It embroiders beautifully but sews about as smoothly as a jackhammer!

I have the Brother ULT 2001 and I love the way it sews and the way it embroiders. In fact I like it so much that I bought a second one. Now I can sew on one and embroider on the other.

I agree with Herb, have a machine for sewing and a machine for embroidery. This way, you can sew while your embroidery is stitching out.

I would say that most folks here have a Brother machine. I have their bottom-of-the-line and have been very successful at selling quilt blocks on eBay to help fund my hobby... And it embroiders my kids' name nicely on their underwear :)

I would like to know what the most popular machine is for this NG.

If you get the embroidery only machine then you can do both sewing and embroidering at the same time. The Janome 300E is a great embroidery only machine, it has a larger stitch field than the brother machines, and fantastic stitch quality. The machine should be software upgradeable to future models, add to all this that you wont need to spend hundred to get a device to get the designs over to the machine, they work from a compact flash card and you can buy every thing you need for around £20 in the UK, if you go for a brother machine you will be looking at a lot more expense to get the designs to the machine unless you go for one of the top model ones. I have the janome 10001, but if I was now buying my machine again I would be going for he 300E and a seperate sewing machine and still have lots of mony to spare, the 300E was launched after I purchased my machine.
