Making Glass Table Mats

How does one stick a picture to glass in such a way that it is preserved, able to withstand hot plates on the glass, and looks neat, professional finish - just like the glass table mats one can buy in kitchen shops? What type of glass do I need. What adhesive should be used and what is the method of sealing the picture against the glass etc?

You will probably find that the image has been applied to the glass, either by use of a decal transfer or by use of silk-screen printing, and has then been fired in a kiln or lehr to fix the decoration.

I would be interested in seeing the product that you saw in a store and also what the price was. The price alone would tell us all what type of glass and what type of processing it experienced. It does sound like an intersting experiment to try and come up with a craft product that would draw in the impulsive type of customer.
