EOT (eventually on topic)

For years now, I've thought it would be a good idea to make something like a pink pig potholder to put on the front of my dishwasher. You know, sort of a sign to warn me that the dishes inside have Not been washed. Not exactly an original idea but so much better than artfully draping a dishtowel over the door to remind me. Except. The door is vinyl / plastic / something and the door handle has no opening for attaching any sort of hook. Today I had an aha! sort of moment. I believe it would be possible to use some very serious glue and mount a magnet on the underside of the door's top ledge. Then I could post my warning pig or a snowman or a Keep Out potholder. Have any of you wandered down this path and do you have any suggestions? Polly

Is the front a decor panel to match the kitchen? If so, it should be possible to attach a strong magnet to the hidden side...

If it's smooth enough, would a suction cup-hook work?

I like the idea of a suction cup hook.

Or some press-to-stick velcro?

I thought of the Velcro too... But then I thought of the ikky stuff that the front of dishwashers is prone to collecting, and the thought of that caught in Velcro hooks... Yuk! ;)

Yeah, exactly.

I would go with the suction hook idea.

Polly, 3-M makes those Command strip hooks that you could attach to the front of the door. They will be strong enough to hold the potholder. Even better, they are removable later, and leave no marks. Debra in VA See my quilts at

How about gluing a piece of velcro on the door and put the other side of the velcro on the back of your pig?

What about those stick-on cloth holders that you push things into?

This is a bit hard to explain buy they are like a hollow disc with one flat side cut into wedges, and the other side sticking to a surface. When you push cloth into the centre of the disc the rubbery "wedges" grab and hold, and you just pull the cloth out. The overall shape is flat (ie. no hook to grab you) and the ones I use are only about 1/2" deep.

They are the sort of thing sold to put up in showers to hold wash cloths, etc. I had mine in the laundry for cleaning cloths.

I have a nice suction cup shaped like a pig :) I had your same problem, the external door is in plastic, and this thing holds perfectly two towels on the fridge, just make sure to clean the surfaces before applying.

I have seen a magnet (my parents own one) that has DIRTY in one direction and CLEAN in the other. They turn it to whatever it's supposed to be, so the word it's supposed to be is legible/upside right.

Of course, most of the time, they forgets.

I'd have to wear the pig around my neck. When my dishwasher quit working I had it removed and installed a bookcase for my cookbooks ;-)

Eureka! I know what you're talking about - they work much like the dust mop cloth holder that I use to scoot around in the sewing room to be sure all the pins and needles are where they belong. I sure wish I'd asked you all about this yesterday. We had to go floor shopping for our remodel project. It's just for one tiny bathroom but the adventure may go on for years. I'll bet the home stores would have had what you've suggested. Polly

I speak from experience with the suction cup -- they fall down.....mind you, DH and I were using one of those clippy men (like the magnet ones marketed to classroom teachers) with a suction cup on the back. Most of the time when we went to flip our sign (an index card with the appropriate wording on each side) the dang thing fell more often than not.....it was an on-going battle.....

my two cents, Tricia (back to work in a few hours)

Maybe you could use one of those little plastic hooks for kitchen widgets that come with adhesive pads on the back. I've seen them in clear plastic, which would be pretty unobtrusive. I have a row of them inside a cupboard door to hold all the little tools that used to disappear at the back of a drawer. Roberta in D

How about a magnet? Just make a little velcro pocket on the back of your pig and stick a magnet in it. That way you can take the magnet out when you wash it. Or you could get fancy and get one of those coated magnets that can go through the wash and sew it right in. If you don't have anyplace on the front of the dishwasher that a magnet will stick, get one of those sticky backed ones and stick it on.
