On Topic - tiny scraps

And I do mean tiny. Serger trimmings, things less than1 inch wide, selveges, etc. I have been putting them in a waste bin of their own, and now it is full. What do y'all do with yours? Should I just throw them in the trash, or is there a use for them that I'm not aware of? Thanks in advance,

Selveges are good to tie up tomato plants. The tiny scraps could be used for stuffing pincushuions or stuffed animals. There's a quilting technique called confetti quilts that uses tiny scraps- they may need to have a fusible on the back before they are chopped up??? I'm not very well informed about it, but the photos of the quilts are lovely.

I cut them up even tinier and use them as stuffing in toys. For example, I made a couple of 3" square cubes for Pillbug's therapy. I have also made a "snake" to go around my laptop as a spaceholder in my old briefcase. Instead of cutting foam down to size, I just made a long "snake" and stuffed it with tiny scraps.

Howdy!

Stuff it, as Anita does.

Just took a glop of scraps (trimmings and threads) out to the compost pile where the birds find some of them and the rest turn into ...compost. ;-) Waste bin? Never! Cotton is recyclable.

Mine go into small things as the other have mentioned, and also into small

10 X 12" throw pillows for the couch. The small family dog loves to lay on these! Barbara in FL

The selvage srtips are great for tying tomato plants to stakes in the garden. Gen

That is way cool, Lisa. Can I send you my scraps? LOL

Seriously, from all the replies, I can tell there are uses for these. However, I'm not in the habit of making stuffed animals, pincushions, or free-form pillows. I'll ship them to anyone that wants them, unless, of course, y'all have too many of your own already.

You can getthin clear vinyl at Joanns and make any shape you want. My new idea is tomake book thongs-a heart shape on each end of crochet cotton. You'll get theidea if you look at the picture.

Good friend and I saw a quilt several yers ago at Sun Prarie Wis. Made fromselvages, they were sewn to foundation allowing the printing along the selvage to show, and were sorted according to color then blocks sewn into a quilt, VERY intersting and lots of interest at the show...my friend is in process of making one now.... Same friend is making plates and baskets by winding 1/2"-3/4" strips around cotton clothesline then zig zagging the "cord" together....

Right now, I have a cloth bag next to the cutting table, about the right size for a sofa cushion. My too-teensy pieces go in there. When it's full, I'll make it a pretty cushion cover. It doesn't feel lumpy, because the pieces I can't use are Very small. Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap

Oh my! I have this container next to my scrap container which is next to my SM. I periodically add pieces and some nice lady comes every two weeks and takes them away. That is what I do with my teeny tiny scraps. Anything under

2 1/2" goes in there.

Oh, I did this one quilt where I had some 1 1/2" pieces that I sewed all together and made into scrap cloth which I cut into placemats, but I now have enough placemats. LOL

I use the selvage strips to crochet rag rugs. They are great in front of the sink, or in heavy traffic areas. I wash them with a bit of bleach and detergent and they are as good as new!

Hey KJ, Thanks, and long time no see! I wish most of those were current projects but they are not. I took a new job this summer and we usually work 50 to 56 hours every week. Probably goes without saying that I'm tired a lot now and I dont have quite as much time to pop in to RCTQ and visit. Just had to share the Wad Hearts and Wad dolls though. They are so much fun to create and so easy to do.

I am still teaching locally and in November I will teach in Omaha for their guild. I do have a few new things-will have to get pictures up soon. I did a fun pieced purse that is from silk, hand dyed velvet, and batiks-I think you would like it.

Looking forward to July when I will attend the Crazy Quilt Retreat

to hang with my CQ buddies from allover the US and just RELAX. I am going to take the class Mud PieDying...should be really fun. I am excited about a new project I will be starting this week. I am participating in a really fun swap. Participants swapped out a baggie full of cq goodies and received one in return. We each make a cq item from what we received-then return the item to the original owner. I am going to make a cq music box. I found the music box works on ebay yesterday. I even have an idea of how to create divisions inside the box so it can be useful as a jewerly box. Hope it turns out as nice as it is in my mind's eye :-)

I finally got to Grinnell Fiberworks last fall.....I was in heaven! I just love their shop-such interesting fabrics and beads, and, and and.....

I will have to let you know when I get new pictures up. For now I'm off to sew on yet another new purse, a sample to show in a class next week.

Good to chat with you again,

Howdy!

This reminds me of the jars of "quilt seeds" and "quilt salsa", lots of scraps stuffed into jars, like a pack of confetti.

Aha!! That's what I need, some "nice lady" to come take them away, although every two weeks would be a bit often for me. Every couple of months would work. Want to ask her if she wants mine, too? Although I've been wondering if I could make the dog some kind of indestructible bed out of them, something with cedar shavings and fabrics scraps for stuffing, but I think the outside would have to be Kevlar or something, because he chews up everything else. LOL
