What do you Brits know of baseball? I have fond memories of going to Ebbets Field, the original home of the BROOKLYN DODGERS, with my father and cheering my 8 year old heart out for the boys of summer. T'was a sad day indeed when they defected to Los Angeles.

There was no need to know anything, there was boring old cricket instead and there is not a whole lot to pick between the two games. Both move at a snail's pace and are boring to the extreme. Though I must say, back then (don't know about now) cricket players did not defect.

The kids and I would plan on attending cricket when David was playing based on the cricket tea that would be served by any given club, you got to know which ones had ladies producing scrumptious teas.

Another time he was playing cricket for the navy against a South African team at the Nuffield Club in Portsmouth and the kids and I were amongst the protestors who marched with AntiApartheid placards through the middle of the cricket match. We just pretended we didn't know each other but that was a more lively game.

Cricket is sort of 'sacred' to Englishmen.

What's really sad is baseball today is nothing like it was back when it was called the National Pastime. Fans flocked to the games and other than perhaps a glass of beer (I'm not sure beer even came in cans back then) no one got drunk, or threw stuff at the players, or at each other. The stands were filled with families and it really was fun.

And by the way, I might still be able to name the players on that team if I tried hard enough.

Now, it's all about money.

I heard someone commenting last summer on the fact there had been the strike etc. plus now the cost of a ticket and buying just a hot dog for your kid was astronomical. I wasn't surprised, if the players get several million dollars each in salary, it has to be generated somewhere.

One day it will arrive at "If they charge it, they won't come", everything has a price.

The cheap seats at Jacobs Field (Cleveland) are $7 and only children under age three do not need a ticket. There is a Kids Club and children who belong to that get a ticket discount. Local businesses also have half-price or buy-one-get-one-free ticket promotions available if you look around. There are also several games this season that are sponsored by Sugardale so all hot dogs are $1 for those games. Patrons are allowed to bring their own food and juice boxes to games. Occasionally they will do a family night special (tickets, food/drink vouchers) but it is always assumed a family consists of exactly four persons. Of course you have to add gas and parking to the total unless you live in an area where mass transit can get you to the game.

It is pricey but it is still a lot of fun. Just wish the Indians' score was reversed right now (they are losing 5-2 to Pittsburgh).

Don't hold your breath. Our local basketball team charges far more for both tickets and refreshments than the nearby baseball teams, and nonetheless sell out every game. IIRC, the "cheap seats" are close to $100 at the basketball games.
