Altoids tins -- how to finish

Would SKS please point to instructions on how to finish cross-stitch covers for the Altoids tins? I've found one set of instructions on line (I think victorias sampler site), but they are unclear to me. I did one of the patterns on that site but it came out very small, using

28 ct over one as directed. And I had real trouble following the finishing instructions, ended up winging it and of course, it came out really awful. I wish I could find a site devoted to the decorating of these neat little tins. Patterns, finishing, etc. Thanks for helping if you can! Kathy

Sorry if this is outdated and bores you. I have a grand-daughter who just loves little trinket boxes. To personalize them and put some money in them will make great stocking stuffers this Christmas. And then she can use them for whatever, jewelry, pins, paperclips, coins, etc. Or toss them. And my grandson will like them too for his treasures.

Oh Pat, ya old poop ... they're great - I made a few for some needlework friends last Christmas - I put that magentic stuff in the bottom - they're great for holding your needles, needle threaders, etc. and they're cute.

I do agree with you - I think little girls always love little boxes to hold things. I even picked the Xmas cards this year that came in a nice box, so my g-granddaughter could have the box lol Her mama has always treasured a tin I picked up at Heathrow one year with a marmalade cat on it looking like the Mona Lisa !

I've never seen charts for this purpose. Do you remember who published them?

I think they would make very nice gift boxes for little things. Nicer then using paper that everyone crumples up and throws away.

I don't know, because I have never actually done it, but I know a few years back there was lots of discussion here about it, many people doing it. If Kathy holds tight, they are sure to turn up with suggestions.

You can line then with fabric over "filler", and they can be for needles etc. I read a lot, but don't do much

Not Altoids, but when I was in Labrador, I bought a darling little wooden handmade box from the fellow who made them for my grand-daughter. She still has it!

-------------- I found some patterns on victoriasampler.com but I found the instructions for both stitching and finishing to be very confusing. The "Tiny Things" pattern came out about half the size I expected and finishing was vague. Kathy

because it's prettier than having uncovered tins with stuff in them?

I have three Altoids/Sucrets tins in the sewing room with pins in them, one in each of my travel kits with a small sewing kit in them, one on the stitching table, and one in my travel stitching bag.

They're big enough to hold a couple of bobbins of thread, a pack of needles, a small pair of scissors (or a Clover thread cutter), a tape measure, etc.

Mind, none of mine are covered, but that's because no one but me will see them, and I don't care that much.

I too have a few of them that I stuck magnetic stuff in and that I use for needles and pins.

Now I would like to decorate a few for gifts.

That sounds great. I've seen some pictures of finished ones and I'm sure I can find something to cross stitch or needlepoint the top. It's mostly the finishing that I'm unsure of.

From "samplersandsuch" I have: United we Stand Kokapelli Sunset (Tin of the Month Club) Shamrock posy ( TOMClub Valentine Lace (TOMClub Tapestry Unicorn

From White Hart I have Rainbow Row ( Charleston, SC).

from Dreams of Stitches I have Vineyard Tin.

Samplersand such have a full page of instructions for finishing. They look good. I remember hearng a hint that sometimes there is printing on the sides of the tin, and they might need a spray of paint.

You can check the website, or I can send you the lot, Lucille, and you can do what you want. Eventually I *WILL* do them as little gifts.

I've considered filling one with an assortment of gift cards for a young couple setting up house: one for Target for the generic household stuff, one for Home Depot, one for the grocery, one for the drugstore, and one to a nice restaurant. The box would be nicer than an envelope and harder to lose track of in the move.

Thanks Sharon. That's a nice site for me to browse in. Since my LNS closed, I feel deprived.

I also took a quick look on e-bay and found several that looked nice. I think I'll buy one and then I'll have the finishing instructions if I want to do more of them.
