Good Morning everyone,
I need to know a different way to cast on than the way my mother taught me when I was nine (wrap yarn around fingers and thread needle through). Is there a website that has detailed instructions on how to cast on so that it doesn't show large loops on the edges?

Look for "long-tail cast-on" and variations.
You can "knit on", too. Make a slipknot on the left needle. Knit into the loop, transfer the new stitch to the left needle. Repeat ad naus until you have enough stitches. An alternate way of doing this is to knit BETWEEN stitches once you have two stitches on the left needle. One of these is flexible and stretchy, one is not. I don't recall which is which because I don't use either one very often.

I think the one between the stitches is more flexible. It is what I have been using recently (esp for socks, thanks to a couple of people's recommendations here!).
