Another ? on fabric painting re: removing sizing

Thanks so much to all who responded to my first question about painting on fabric. I've decided to order some Aunt Martha ballpoint tube paints from Mary Maxim. I'm quite excited about my new project and should be receiving my order sometime next week.

I've been reading on several websites that I should wash my project (in my case these are stamped [in colour] pillowcases) to remove the sizing. Do you think if I do wash them, the stamped pattern will disappear or will it simply be a little lighter but still easy to paint on? My own conclusion about washing fabric before using is that this is the procedure to follow if you plan to iron on a transfer pattern. If there's already a pattern on the fabric, should I just paint over the cross-stitches or wash before I start painting?

I apologize if this seems to be a dumb question, but need to know as I don't want to ruin these pillowcases as they're quite pretty. Thanks again for any information you can provide to this newbie. :0)

If you're at all concerned about the pattern getting too light, I'd wash them after the paints have cured. The sizing will come out then. When I quilt, I tend to wash and iron my fabric before sewing. Even do that with a lot of garment sewing, depending on the fabric. But, I definitely want to have the true size of the fabric, and will spray sizing back into the washed fabric for quilting so it has stiffness. What you don't want is to be left with clothing or fabric that still has all the muck from the manufacturing - excess dye, sizing, dirt.

Not a dumb question. If the paints specifically tell you that you must have no sizing in the fabric they're to be used on, then follow the directions. Just perhaps do a tracing of the design before you wash the cases, so if you need to put it back on, you can with a fabric marking pen. If the paints say nothing, then my suggestion is paint away, then wash later.

Enjoy your project!
