Mirjam -- I doubt if The Karen was joking! Her post sounds like she actually thought you meant Hawaii and was telling you what she heard from her friend there! Remember, The Karen is a bit like MOI -- she won't just give you a simple answer, she will give you details :-).

Never Mind i am very glad to hear our [Israeli] Hospital started to work and is able to treat 500 patients a day , in all departments , that is the main thing , i know it is a drop in the ocean of needs , but it is something positive.

You DO realise Israel is NOT the only country helping do you ? The USA is pouring millions in - Canada is also doing it's best (has been for years and sadly much of the building they did in an area away from P au P is all ruined too) and France too is doing likewise, just to mention three.

This is not a competition, these are people in terrible distress, get real!

We are a very small country and far away , The media [ as many of you here ], are always so quick with scolding us , thus i think we also should get some acknoledgement for the good we do ,, mirjam

Actually, I support the work your people did getting revenge for the 1972 Olympic slayings. Very well done. Just wish we could do the same for the

2001 New York/Pennsylvania/DC slayings.

As Mirjam said, the actions of any one country ( or denomination or organization for that matter) are a drop in the bucket when the need is so immense. It is hardly the time to take credit for any one effort. I was encouraged to hear that China was one of the first countries sending aid--it has been some time since one felt they were a part of the world community. It is so hard to hear of the lack of the things we take as very basic--there was a news report at noon today about a doctors trying to work in one of the few standing hospitals with a shortage of sutures, anaesthesia, and even clean water. One of the contributions the US has made is the presence of Navy ships that can purify huge quantities of water at a time. Haiti had a problem with reliable water supplies (among many other problems) before the quake--let's hope that after the immediate need is met some of those long festering issues will be addressed by the world with the same dedication.

We have a lot of Haitian boat people living in my area and I can tell you they are the poorest and least well educated people I know. They consider their lives here wonderful in comparison to what they had back home, while I consider the way they live here to be abject poverty.

Hopefully, once they get this urgent situation under control, they will be able to get rid of the dreadful infrastructure in the country and make it better.

If I did know one I think Gupta might put them off.

Really Karen the television, the radio is full of news of Haiti, pls give it a rest. There is virtually nothing we can do save make large donations to the Red Cross, they are best placed to use it to best advantage.
