Bought my first pattern for a dress!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like such a baby :) I bought Simplicity 5767. It's a large size pattern so I can make it in an 18 and it will be nice and loose. It looks easy enough to take in as I continue to lose weight. Wish me luck.

I also bought the fabric on the two dollar table. 100% cotton in an Asian print, red with Chinese symbols and coins.

Congratulations! You can do this!! Take your time and follow the directions. And if you have a question, we're here to help.

If I were you, I'd prewash the fabric and dry it . . . just the way you plan on laundering it when it's made into whatever it is you're making. Iron it, then GO!

By the way: those arrows on the pattern mean to lay the pattern on the fabric on grain. You usually measure from the arrow to the selvege edge so that it's the same distance the length of the arrow (use a tape measure). If you don't know what that means, ask. Otherwise you'll have a dress that is slightly askew. It won't hang correctly. I remember my first blouse and thought I knew it all. Ahh, to be 14 again.

Thanks, I am certain there will be questions.

It's just cheap cotton and very stiff with the sizing so I was wondering if I should do that first. Now I'm not sure this was the correct fabric since the bottom of the dress has a significant flounce. Maybe something more soft would be good.

Oh no! What? LOL. I'm already in trouble :) I think I am going to read some tutorials of using patterns before I do a thing. Stay tuned. V

Why don't you come join us on alt.sewing? Or rcts if you prefer, but the former has a lot more traffic. The sewists on there can recommend sewing books (most of which should be available in your local free public library), web tutorials etc., and generally give lots of advice. The instructions on Simplicity patterns these days are often considered to be not exactly the best, but there are plenty of experts available if you run into problems.

I ALWAYS wash every cloth before cutting it ,,, this eliminates many problems ,,, possible shrinkage ? color leaking ???? what ever ..... And makes me aware of it`s behaviour later on. As to a flounce ,,,, thread a needle with a plain thread ,, and make some long tacks ,,, pull it together and see how it and if flounces ,,, if it doesnt , either omit the flounce and cut the dress longer in a straight line , and use another pattern for this cloth, or use a matching softer material for the flounce ,, mirjam
