Hi, Welcome. I am also a crocheter for many years (since my teens). At times I become obsessed with crocheting and then I must take a break and cross stitch. It is a great stress buster, so relaxing in front of the TV. I have never attempted to crochet socks. I have done slippers, though.

Again, welcome. Can you post some pics of your completed works?

Let's see now, "boot socks for husband" is synonymous with "house slippers for wife prior to felting"?

I knit myself "boot socks," and somehow they end up a bit felted and just the right size for my wife to wear around the house.

The first advice that I give to all new sock knitters is that short (5.5"), wooden DPN make learning sock knitting easier. (I almost gave up knitting after trying those slippery, skinny, pointy, long, cold metal needles that came in the first "sock making kit" that I bought.) Then, I started making my own short, warm, friendly wooden needles, and learned to make good socks. Now, I am back to slipperier, skinnier, pointier, longer, colder metal needles and love them because they are fast.

I just took another look at the dowels in my needle drawer - Some time ago I made #7 straight needles with little fimo ball ends for myself. Now maybe I will try making some sock and glove needles. Where the shorter ones would really have come in handy was when I was making gloves for my granddaughters. Long double points are NOT handy when making little fingers for little girls gloves!

Socks are addictive, aren't they?? There's nothing like the sense of accomplishment the first time you turn a heel!

I have some old glove needles that are only about five inches long. But other people knit the fingers with double-knitting to make a tube on only two dpns. Meg Swansen came up with a way to knit glove fingers as I-cord (then used a crochet hook to loop up the long stretch of yarn into another stitch).

With all these methods, maybe someday I'll actually knit a pair of gloves. :-)

Yannow what? I can't remember turning my first heel. Kind of like I can't remember learning how to read. And yet I have friends who absolutely refuse to knit socks because of turning the heel.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! This is such an active group (which is why I joined). There aren't too many knitters around here, and I wanted to be able to bounce ideas around with likeminded folks. I'll tell you a little more about myself and try to answer the questions everyone asked.

I'm from Mississippi, born and bred. I am interested in art which is where I got my screen name. Hesira was an Egyptian physician and scribe. I like the way the name sounds, but I am not Egyptian, a physician or a scribe. (Or a man for that matter).

I would be happy to post photos of things I've knitted or crocheted, but I'm not sure how to. When I figure it out, I will be sure to show you some of my stuff. I am all but finished with my first sock. I have to Kitchener (SP?) the toe and then I can see just how much too large it is for my guy. Then I can start on my first PAIR of socks. I bought some Patons Classic Wool Merino worsted weight (2 skeins) and plan to use #6 dpn's. The sock I just finished was made with leftover Wool Ease (LB) and #5 dpn's. I'm using a pattern I found on line by Joan Fernbach. Wish me luck!

I see that Noreen gave you good advice about setting up a place to store pictures, so I will just echo that. I have a Yahoo photo album which works find for me. I will attach the URL so that you can see it. It is very easy to operate.
