Greetings from Long Island - new member

Hello all... I joined the squares swap and Nora suggested that I introduce myself to the rest of the group. I'm a 45 year old single mom (my son is 12). We have a little family of four cats, China, Snowflake, Shadow & Meteor. I work a full time job as an office manager/accountant for a winery; and a part-time bookkeeper for a housing authority. I live on Long Island (grew up and have lived here all my life), in New York. I also volunteer as a firefighter/EMT. In addition to quiltmaking, I enjoy sewing, cross stitching, beading and knitting. I especially enjoy knitting in the winter months. I would consider myself an advanced beginner. I'm self-taught, after re-learning some of the basics that my 4th grade math teacher taught me many moons ago. In progress right now is a fisherman's shrug (Lion Brand pattern); and a Suede bag (Berroco pattern). I've made dozens of scarves, a few felted bags and hats, and several knitted caps. I aspire to making a pair of socks. I will be attending several classes at my local shop. I took one last week. It was on making flowers. The upcoming ones are for a shawl and some basics such as "tassels, pompoms", "gauge matters", "kitchener stitch"...etc. Regards, Cynthia

Welcome, Cynthia. Wow, your life is really busy! Many of us here make socks. In fact, I am wearing a pair made from Opal as I type this. They feel so much better than store-bought!

Hi Cynthia! Sounds like we have a lot in common.....I've been a single parent for years and also have a small herd of cats at home. Cynthia, a big welcome to the group which I know you will enjoy - I am the lazy menber of this group ( well we need *one* lazy one, surely !!) I do very little knitting these day (very little use for it here) and my crocheting started and has never got beyong the 6 x 6 squares and my one claim to doing anything regularly is cross stitch as I just love that and become quite addicted to it -although I am running out of places to use it or anyone to give it to - i can always just take it out and look at it I guess. Hi Bonnie:

How come only looking at quilts? I took the plunge last fall and took a beginner course....it's was a lot of fun, lots to learn and oh so addicting. I also enjoy cross-stitching, sewing and knitting.

Gwen, if you're lazy then so am I because I hardly do any knitting or crocheting anymore either. That doesn't mean I don't love to look at the yarns and patterns and think about what I could do with it. I keep figuring someday, when my hands and arms will cooperate, something will tempt me enough to start. Whether I finish or not, is a different story which depends greatly on if my hands and arms continue to cooperate long enough to allow it. ;o) I DO want to try at least one of those cute little Japanese animal thingies we were talking about on here last week though. Since they are so small, when I feel up to starting I just may be able to get one done before my hands and arms give me a hard time again.

Hi Donna.

I tried quilting several years ago with a group of ladies from church, but I just did not care for it. Now, piecing things together is not a problem, either on machine or by hand, but the actual quilting was just no fun for me. It seemed too tedious.....however, I do cross stitch on some very fine linens and I don't consider that to be too tedious. ;-)

I have sister-in-law who does some beautiful quilting and appliqué work.

Well, actually truth be told, when I said that I quilt, I really meant that I peice tops. Paper piecing is my favorite. (I have some photos at
