Another new member

Hi everyone. I just joined the group yesterday, but I've been scrapbooking for years (like, 8 years now, I think). I first got into scrapbooking through CM, and I still go to a CM crop once a month, but I also try to venture out into the rest of the scrapbooking world occasionally.

Lately, I've been less and less happy with the CM style - I'm probably just bored with it. The white backgrounds have become far less appealing to me, and I've started to learn how to use colored papers in the background while not distracting from the photos and journaling. But it's turned out to require far more talent than I originally thought.

Anyway, I'm hoping to find some new ideas, and maybe be inspired to try a few new tools (I'm heavily invested in Sizzix right now). I'm certain I'll stick to CM albums because I have yet to find any other that I like as well. But I'm needing a new style. I've got a web site (a couple, actually), and my next venture is going to be to start posting some of my layouts on my personal site. Who knows.. I may even go back to my first layouts and post a few of those, just for comic relief. :-)

Thanks for reading. I look forward to some fresh ideas. Julie

OK.. Me again. I thought my gmail sig would be appended to this post, but I can see now that it wasn't. It would be kinda hard to see my web sites without it. :-)

That would be hilarious! I was HEAVILY into Fiskars scissors when I first started and every photo has a different edging whether it needs it or not.

Hi Julie and welcome to RCS and the REAL art of scrappin!!

CM is where I got my start about 4 years ago too and I tired of their fast, mat and lace on THEIR white or black backgrounds with THEIR products!!

Anyhow it is a good way to get started I agree and the importance of archiving properly but they do need to become a bit more broader visioned with products. However their albums are hard to beat!!

So hop in and have fun!!

Welcome Julie. I had to chuckle at your comment about your LO's being comic relief! :-) I looked back at some of my first pages just the other day, and as bad as I want to redo them after seeing them, I think i will leave them as a memory of learning to scrapbook..lol You will get lots of fresh ideas here!! Try doing some of the challenges too. It keeps us creating and productive, too! Linda C Illinois

Wow! Thanks for the welcome everybody! Many of you have echoed the "can't wait to see your layouts" sentiment, which brings me to a question. I did browse many of your sites out there, and noticed that many of you simply photograph your layouts and post those images. But I was wondering if there was any other technique anyone was in the habit of using. Photographing layouts certainly appears to work well, but it seems that if they could be scanned (probably a trick with a

12x12 layout, it seems the colors and such could be more accurately represented.

Just curious. In the meantime, I'll probably start photographing my current book - just since it's down here in my work area already.

Hi Julie,

I actually found scanning did not respresent the colors as well as a photo. The shine of the light off the photographs at times really looked terrible. Then one would have to stitch the 12X12s together if they didn't have a scanner that could accomodate them. So, taking a picture seems to work out the best for me.

I scan my layouts in two scans and stitch them together. My scanning program comes with a stitching option. I tried photographing them, but didn't like the way that the pictures turned out.

Julie, I also prefer to scan my work, but it is tricky with 12x12 LO's and sometimes a bit frustrating, because you have to scan your LO in two parts and then do some digital stitching using software like ArcSoft of Panostitch. One of the ladies on the group recently send me the first proggie and it works pretty good, but you do get the occasional LO (especially when you have bulky stuff on them) that don't scan and stitch well, resulting in some shadowy or blurred parts on your scanned image. Having said all that, when you do get it right, the quality of the colours and dimensions are a git better IMHO.

There are also a few tricks in taking good digi pics of your LO. It's better to do it in daytime (cloudy days are the best) where there is a a bright spot in your home, but not with direct light reflecting on your pics or in a dark spot where you have to use your cam's flash light. Afterwards you can crop of the excess around your LO with your photo editor. HTH

I scan my LOs in 2 scans then stitch them together with software. I used to scan at a low resolution, but now I scan at the highest resolution I can get. One thing I like about scanning my LOs, is that if they are ever damaged in any way, I can print the scanned LO and use as a replacement.

Thanks ladies! My scanner isn't all that old, so maybe it comes with some stitching software.. I'll have to give that a try. My layouts stay pretty flat, because my books often get squished on a bookshelf, and I don't like the impressions made on the other pages by 3-d embellishments. Therefore, scanning may work out pretty well for me. I'll have to see if I can stitch with my scanner software. If I can't, then I've got Photoshop Elements, so I know I can stitch with that. It just involves yet another step with yet another piece of software.

My personal web site is on a server that belongs to my DH and I, and he's got some gallery software he's using that he likes, so he's going to help me get it set up in my home directory. So we're getting close. I am anxious to start posting some of my work. I've taken a few photos of some of my recent stuff and that's what I'll start with.
