I am here in New Brunswick, Canada. At the moment am knitting "Teddies for Tragedies" They are little teddies made from scraps of yarn, they are sent to underpriveleged children in third world countries. I got the idea from a friend in the Spring and to date have knit over 80 teddies. They are destined to go to Haiti to an orphanage and community where a Doctor from here is going in February. This is a wonderful way to use up little balls of yarn and heart warming to know a child will have somthing to cuddle and call their own. Last winter I knit a lot of Mens Woolen Work Socks and Mittens.... Last week knit two sweaters for my grandsons little dog one from pattern posted by Spinninglilac.

What a lovely idea. my dentist goes to third world countries once a year and does work there, This might be a nice idea for him to carry. Any chance of the pattern for the little Teddies?

Directions are given below. They are very simple and quick to make, If you can make a little bag for your teddy (details below) that would be the most welcome, but if not, it dosent matter.

TEDDIES KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS

Yarn..example Red Heart ... 1 pair size 10 needles Main color (must be fawn shade) - for head and paws. Trouser Color

- Jumper Color - Scarf Color Stuffing - please stuff Teddy only with polyester or other healthy padding. Foam rubber is not . . recommended as babies may chew it. Please do not deviate from the pattern as we like all Teddies to look the same. Jumper/Trouser/Scarf colors should be bright and cheerful

- Cast on 10 stitches main color. Knit 10 rows

- Change to trouser color and knit 30 rows, Make another leg in the same way

- Knit across all 20 stitches and work 16 rows. Change to jumper color and knit 24 rows.

- Change to main color for head and also change to stocking stitch. Work 5-1/2 inches .

- Change to jumper color. Continue remainder of teddy in reverse order.

- Stitch down the sides of the head. With jumper color, pick up 8 stitches either side of the neck, join (16 stitches in all) and knit 20 rows. Change to main color and knit 10 rows for paws. - Sew up Teddy leaving opening in crotch. Sew diagonal top corners forears before stuffing. After . .. stuffing has been inserted, run thread through the knitting around the neck to draw it in.

- Sew happy face on teddy. For mouth, please use either stem stitch or back stitch.

- Scarf. Cast on 75 stitches. Knit 4 rows and cast off. Tie scarf on Teddy and sew firmly to back of . . .. neck close to jumper edge. (Do Not sew down at front)

- Teddies also require little bags made from material with a drawstring at the top. Finished size should.. be 10" x 13". Please do not use elastic as drawstring.
