Even though I live in Florida, I can't get a decent bagel this far north of Miami so for me the nearest really good bagel is 1500 miles to the north in Brooklyn, or as a close second 4+ hours to Miami.

Cream cheese is of course Philadelphia and lox only comes in packages. Oh well!

I'm thankful for Wegmans - real lox and cream cheese. But, bagels, welllll. I think you can get good bagels in Boca. I know there is a place IIRC on Jog up towards Del Ray. And the bagels at TooJAys in Boca are pretty good - better than anything around here.

We do have a TooJays close to me in Stuart and they usually have decent lox, but the bagels are just so-so and never the same twice.

I go there every so often because besides being the only decent deli around here, there's a Steinmart right in the same strip mall and a TJMaxx across the street, but I never remember to buy lox.

Now you've got my mouth watering so maybe that would be something to do tomorrow. >

Yeah, TooJays isn't fabulous, but it's better than anything up here. Last time we were in FLA we went to the Wolfie's that had opened in Boca, and it was ok, but disapointing.

DH's grandfather owned a deli, and so we were both raised in the NY/NJ area and used to really good deli - even with my family in Miami there were several good deli type restaurants. And really good bagels. So, I definitely miss it. We can get decent to actually good deli - a couple of places import from NY, and since the local (4 miles) Wegman's has a kosher kitchen, they have imported in all kinds of things. Bobka & rugelach from a bakery in Brooklyn. Knishes, and a good fish selection.

A guy that we know from hockey (played with us, nice guy, not nearly as good on the ice as he thought) owns a huge bagel making operation here. They supply a bunch of restaurants and IIRC grocery stores. He apprenticed in Brooklyn with someone, and has gotten rich with his bagel business. The funniest part of this is that a bunch of young guys work for him - kids not going away to college, etc - kind of hockey bums - so he's always got a few of them to play hockey with. We would wonder if they feared for their jobs if they didn't have him play - like having a "C" goalie with the "A" skaters

- not so great. But, again, his storefront is about 35 - 40 miles from here.

I'm hoping that we'll be in FLA sometime this summer - don't know when, but, we'll see. If not, I imagine it won't happen til winter.

I haven't seen airmail paper or onionskin in years. Google and I can't seem to find either in the US....

Alison, in Brooklyn, with a great bagel store just down the street - but I still buy lox in packages. Acme Nova is my favorite (also a Brooklyn company.)

Best bagels in California. (Which is not the same thing as "best bagels in NY", but we take what we can get.)

I wish - there are "bagel shops" but they really don't have good bagels and the "chains" haven't lasted (Bruggers, Einstein Bros....)

Wegman's carries the Acme fish stuff, as well as the hand sliced version of lox and nova. The Costco here has their brand of nova, but it's been frozen, however they also carry another brand - maybe Back Bay or something like that, which is not frozen which we get a lot. Or buy the "nova flakes" at Wegmans - when they get towards the end of the big slabs being hand sliced, the smaller not so pretty but just as tasty slices are sold for about $10 less a pound.

But, the bagels are okay, better than most around here, but still not NY bagels.
