Busy weekend - some stitching involved

Well, it was busy - DS's hockey team had it first two games (won both, a win for each goalie), DD had her first team skate, I worked, I read, I stitched a little.

Pin stretched a few pieces for other people at work, fondled a few finishes of other people.

Finished two books and dealt with Hanna's effects in my basement. Thank goodness the boxes effected were things we were putting off dealing with; the paper remains of DH's parents business. We had looked for a shredding service ages ago, but there were none then. Now, the boxes got wet and I've been shredding anything that might have account numbers or SSN's.

My sympathy on Hanna's effects - we had Gustav's last week and are still drying out. The only upside is that it's been unseasonably cool and the air conditioning is getting a break!

My ds had his first baseball game on the HS fall ball team. He got on base 4/5 times and performed admirably as a pitcher for several innings. Additionally, he played several other positions (they are kind of trying everyone out right now) and did well there - no errors or passed balls. I stitched a bit at the game - grass in a Cheryl Fulmer piece (Grand Tetons) I am doing in needlepoint - pretty easy and lots of it, so I could watch the game at the same time.

Also started the quilting process for a baby blanket I am making for dh's nephew, who is expecting his first child. It's a Jack Dempsey quilt - Noah's Ark - that I did in embroidery and crayon. The rows are sewn together - now I just have to put it together with the batting and backing.

Crayon? How do you do that? I'm intrigued!

I happened to be in Michaels yesterday and saw a little box of Crayola Fabric Crayons. Are those what you used and if so, how do they stand laundering?

I just used plain old Crayola crayons - not the fabric ones as several people on the redwork groups indicated that they don't hold up as well as the regular ones. (Some people swear Prang are even better, but I couldn't find any locally).

Anyway - you color your picture on a cotton blend material, then iron it between two layers of paper towelling. I then added even more color (I like it rich and deep) while the material was still warm and re-ironed. You can then stitch around the outlines.

As to laundering - it should hold up as long as it is not dried too much, although there are redwork stitchers who say they have some very old kitchen towels that still have color after many years and many washings. Or it can be re-colored :)

I'll post a picture when it's done.

It sounds like a fun thing to do. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Good for you - reading something. I keep wanting to, but.....

One of the reasons we moved to the new house - after the basement flooding on a regular basis for numerous reasons - which we kind of fixed - DH was sure the next real storm and we were doomed to a pricey total redo. So, we moved. Hah. In the old house -we actually ended up with almost all of my family photos, records, etc getting totally soaked, and much ruined. We had pictures drying all over - very sad. Someone had shifted some boxes, and things were low that were supposed to be high - so to speak. In this house, during the tropical storm day we watched the trees blow, listened to the sump pump doing its job diligently, and watched movies on our free for the weekend HBO. I kept saying I was going to stitch - but to be honest it was more cozy hanging in the breakfast room (with big windows) watching the storm, and the little TV.

But, I will be stitching this week! I'm thinking the many needles I've poked into people's arms the past couple of weeks doesn't really count. Though I have done some "frogging" of the medical variety. Compliment of the day - one of my patients - in with a migraine after-effect, and kind of nudgy - but quite nice had to have blood work done. She also was antsy 'cause the doc I assisted today was running behind, and patient was scheduled to go to the spa next door. So, I had to go do a blood draw - quickly - so she wouldn't miss her massage - and she announces "good luck - they always have a hard time and it's better if I lie down" . Great - but, amazingly - first stick - right in, just a little technique movement - and voila. She actaully said "I didn't even feel it at all - really!" . So, that was good.

Now, I have to figure out why my lower left calf is completely covered with a rash, and swollen - nice and red, irregular big kind of welty things. Darn. Off to cook in a minute.
