Cheating

As I said in the trip report, punchneedling with ribbon is harder (at least for me) than it looks. The good news is that it's easy to pull out the ribbon and after ironing, re-punch; the bad news is that although the second or maybe third go around was better, there were still loops that either disappeared or grew longer than they should be.

After gently nudging most of the distorted loops into shape, I decided that I wouldn't use the punch needle for the third and final color. Instead, I'm using a chenille needle and making ribbon loops. When I'm off the meds, I'll practise, practise, practise the right way.

Have you ever 'cheated' -- taken a short cut, said what the hey, no one will notice if I don't switch colors, etc., etc.

My crewel teacher didn't call it cheating, she called it 'fudging' - doesn't everyone do it ?

I sure do. Especially when I'm off a on what's supposed to be a straight line. If it's possible to make the two ends meet on an angle I have no problem doing that, unless it must be straight to look right..

I've also been guilty of substituting stitches that pleased me, especially when doing crewel. For example, I don't love backstitch so I'll almost always do outline stitch instead.

I never do what the pattern suggests, I change colours, alter some things entirely and as you say, the final insult, change the stitches! In fact, most often I see something I like, sketch it off and proceed. The Art of Crewel Embroidery started me off on that path.

Ditto, ditto. I change colors (esp. from DMC to overdyes), stitches, do XS in surface work, so on so on

Oh, absolutely. I'm a great one for using variegated/overdye instead of six different shades.

It's not "cheating" it.s call "being creative" and I do it all the time.

Good idea. It may just be that ribbon pn isn't a great thing for you - so just do your gorgeous ribbon embroidery instead.

LOL - that's being creative and innovative! Not cheating. I've certainly done it - often switching to an overdye instead of using a couple of very similar colors. Depends on the effect, etc. And since I don't believe the Stitch Police are coming to raid the house, what the heck.

Exactly. Though, I'm amazed at how many people don't like backstitching. I kind of like the rhythm of doing backstitch - though I generally do double running, or some close variation.
