Cross stitch and silk ribbon

Have any of you worked any cross stitch patterns that include silk ribbon embroidery? I used to see a few pieces out there but haven't heard of any in quite awhile. I designed a piece about 8 years ago, including beading. Mirjam commenting on cross stitch made me scratch my memory for all the different styles of cross stitch that are, or have been, making the rounds. I've also seen stumpwork combined with cross stitch for a unique approach.

Dianne,

I have done some. I find the silk ribbon work goes together very quickly, but I find it hard to get the materials where i am.

A lot of Thea Dueck's designs have silk ribbon embroidery. They also include a lot of other specialty stitches. They're quite popular. I remember having Silk Wisteria in my stash for years and hesitated trying it because of the silk ribbon part. When I finally got up enough nerve the SR was the easiest part! :)

Yes, I've done some ornaments with xs & SRE. I like the combination of the two.

Yep, did one once years ago as a wedding sampler. I can't say the design was all that fabulous, though. I've done lots of other things that includes mixed techniques along with SRE, but most of those didn't feature much xstitch. Most of the time, I don't feel that SRE and xstitch go together all that well in situations where it's mostly cross stitch with some SRE embellishment. I guess it seems to me that the xstitch ends up looking too flat when sitting next to the highly dimensional SRE. When there are other things going on as well, the contrast isn't so stark, but when it's just the two things, I think the two techniques don't often complement each other well.

I did the Victoria Sampler Heirloom Birth Sampler for my niece. It has some SRE work, spider web roses and little leaves. And it has some Hardanger at the bottom as well as xs and specialty stitches. I think quite a few VS pieces include multiple techniques.

You just need to change your mindset, if you are a perfectionist. Part of it's allure (when finished) is it's uniqueness.

It's way easier to get every X looking the same in cross stitch than it is to even two SRE stitches to look alike. Take each stitch independent of the others. If you like the way the stitch looks, it's size, it's form, then forget it doesn't look like the one beside it (as long as they are similar sizes).

Victoria Sampler is very good if you run out of materials. Just email them and let them know what happened and they will send you more.

And their chart packs are on the generous side. Sometimes double what I need, and minimum 1 1/2 times. You should be able to 'test' a stitch at lest once without worry.
