We have a Michael's and a JoAnn's, both about 20 - 30 miles away. However, Wal-Mart was 3 miles away... I never heard of the others, except AC Moore, closest is 1 1/2 hours away. What good is Wal-Mart anymore?

There are many that would echo that sentiment, and just just about stitchery stock.

We are lucky enough to have an independent bookstore in Salem
Yep.

Maybe this is it online?
I bought up a lot of clearance floss at WalMart and now it's gone. They are putting in more "party" supplies and have also cut down on the fabric and there's slightly more scrapbooking.
Hobby Lobby is down to about a 5x6 foot area for crossstitch books, down from almost a whole aisle. Even their yarn, which expanded quickly about 2 years ago, is now fading and they've had huge sales of the $9.99 yarn for $1-2. Quilting surged and is now fading. As others have said, these stores are now all about home dec. You can also find holiday stuff, scrapbooking and florals.
Our area Joanns is trying to cover way too much in a little store. They have a messy needlework area and almost no booklets at all. I really hated it when they brought in all the plastic junk like summer picnic ware, holiday decorations (not for crafting) and other junk.
We have one LNS but it is, of course, overpriced. I find myself looking on the internet if I really need something and I search out little stores when I travel. I actually mail order from the store in Pensacola, Florida.
In reality, I have way more craft supplies than I will ever, ever, ever use. Shopping, for me, is the opportunity to see new trends, improved products, fun ideas and the chance to touch and feel fabrics and fibers. I miss that.
Book stores are going the same way. Borders is now a generic book store and Barnes and Noble has retained a cozier atmosphere. We are fortunate to live near Cheryl's Old Book Barn. They are a gigantic used book store where you'll find kitties and Cheryl's lovely cross stitching on display. We actually went some 25 years ago when the original owner actually used the barn on his farm to start up. It's great to find some local shops like that. - Cross Stitch Cupboard.
Yes. Woman on phone was most accommodating. I cudn't have asked for better service, unless she'd driven the stuff over herself. I can wait 'til it gets here - I keep finding one stitch holidays in the body of the project - grr. My favorite pastime - putting in a stitch here and there and they are invariably the very dark colors.
Isn't that a great LNS? DH and I have visited Pensacola twice now and both times we went to the LNS (it was a bear to find the first time) and I dropped a ton of money! The folks there were so nice :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I love that shop and went there all the time when it was in Gulf Breeze. Jemini, the designer, was the owner and now her daughter is. She moved into Pensacola after the bit hurricane. They are very, very nice about mail orders but I haven't been there for a while and I really miss it. Moni ---- Posted via Pronews.com - Premium Corporate Usenet News Provider ----
and for anyone wondering about this fabulous shop in Pensacola, it's
Fortunately, one of my business partners lives in Pensacola, only about a mile from the shop, so although she doesn't stitch, she knows exactly where it is, and when I come to visit, I won't have to hunt for it ... I will be driven directly to the front door.
