DMC survey on WalMart Floss Elimination

I live in rural area and went to get a skein I was missing for a project and walked out very mad! I ca't believe they did this. It's kinda funny, because before we moved here the first thing I did was to go and make sure I could get DMC in town. I told my DH "Okay, I can live here, they sell DMC". His reply? "Huh?" Yeah, I can buy floss elsewhere, but the local Hobby Lobby has downsized their needlework area massively (in favor of knitting and empty space). They no longer carry the full line of DMC. Grrrrrrrr. Thank goodness for Michael's--they have the full line, though it is more expensive than HL or Wally World.

Right now I have to ride a distance to a Michael's but we are soon to have an A.C.Moore just down the street. I can't wait.

You lucky dog!!! I would LOVE to have an AC Moore near me! The one in Frederick MD was so well-stocked when I was last in there ( 3 years back, I admit).

We do have a Michaels (very little needlework) and a Joanns. And a REAL LNS!! I still would lust for an A.C.Moore, though! We also had a Crafts'n'stuff, but they went out of business in the summer.

Same here. Between the partial collection at WalMart and the partial collection at Michaels, I could usually manage to get all the colors I needed. With only Michaels, I'm mail-ordering more plain DMC.

I e-mailed DMC and suggested that they nudge the LYS. Since there's no longer an LNS here, maybe we can get her to at least carry the full line of floss.

That's why you follow up your survey with an e-mail. I pointed out that (a) Michaels is more expensive and (b) whereas there were two WM's I could get to on a single direct bus, Michaels is always a two-bus trip that takes 1-2 hours each way.

I have a Michael's just about a mile and a half away and they're building an A.C. Moore right across the street from it - literally. What sense does that make? Will both be able to stay in business?

(I've only been in an AC Moore once, and it didn't seem any different than a Michael's.)

In downtown Towson, MD, we had a great Border's Books & Music open about a dozen years ago, then Barnes and Noble opened right across the street and a block down. They coexisted for a few years, but eventually the Borders moved way down the road deeper into the 'burbs and became just another "box store", so now I very, very rarely go there. The downtown Borders had been a "funky" type of store - full of nooks and crannies that invited hanging out. The new one has no "character." So now I go to BN several times a month (always hoping to find a new British cross-stitch mag, but they don't come fast enough, vbg!)

The shell of the building is already up and I check to see what progress has been made every time I pass there. I'll let you know when they open and you can come and visit. Tell Jim that we would have to pass right by the Met's Stadium to get to the store.

I have been so disappointed in the Borders expansion. The original store had *tons* of character, and I loved going there all the time. They mostly feel like just another bookstore now :-(

I don't want to forget you and I know the Met's Stadium is probably a bigger draw then the A.C.Moore, so come on down.

IMNSHO, Joanne's, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and AC Moore each have their own personality but are all going too much towards home decor items which includes furniture. To make room for such large items and more and more knitting materials, my stores have drastically reduced the shelf space for embroidery supplies.

Oh, I dunno. I've never been in an AC Moore, so you could probably talk me into visiting both.

I'm not brave enough to be in the 24 hour WalMart. That is one scary place after about 4 PM!

I have to admit I hate Borders. It just a two level box with books and no chairs. At least the three (more or less local) Barnes and Nobles have distinct personalities and fairly different specialties.

Same here, but we only have one B & N and one Borders to choose from.

I got a rec on an LNS in Fort Lauderdale FL - called and got good advice, very helpful, and mailing me my DMC same day we spoke. I needed 15 skeins and they had loads in stock. Check em out if you want - Cross Stitch Cupboard.
