Embroidering on a purse

DD has a denim bag that she wants me to embroider her initials on. I had no idea how I was going to do this until Cheryl mentioned waste material in an earlier post. I have only heard of this waste material recently, but think this may be the way to go. Could someone please tell me what this is, and where it can be bought? All I've heard is that you stitch on it, then pull the fabric's threads out, which leaves YOUR stitching on the item it was intended for. Would this not leave very loose stitches?

Are you wanting to stitch in surface embroidery or cross stitch or a combination?

I would think most LNS and craft stores that have cross stitch supplies will also carry waste canvas.

Nope! The canvas threads are not thick enough to cause that to happen.

This is a tried and true method of stitching, including surface embroidery on knits. The canvas keeps the knit from stretching. I will add that it's not necessary to use in surface work, but some designers have suggested its use on loosely knit materials.

You shouldn't have trouble finding it.

No it doesn't. Usually (especially if it is going on denim) you can use waste canvas that dissolves in water, so when you are finished, a wash removes it all.

Any LNS should have it, fabric shops have it here (we don't have an LNS) and if all else fails Nordic Needle, or better yet Mrs. Twitchetts Eye in Winnipeg does.

Honestly, I wouldn't go that route for embroidering on a denim purse. I'd be likely to simply draw on it in something that would be covered by the stitches and then chain stitch over it. It's quick and easy and cute on denim.

You could just sketch them on with a quilting pen and then go from there. If you are desperate for some waste canvas, email off list.

Thanks for your input everyone. DD has CHANGED HER MIND!!! She no longer wants her initials stitched on her bag. All part of being a mom I guess. :)

I've still got some on my site and it's marked pretty cheap :) Waste canvas works great - it doesn't leave your stitches loose at all. Just make sure you lightly dampen it before pulling it out and pull parallel with the fabric, not away from it. If you dampen too much, the canvas won't slide out easily, but if too little, it won't come out without breaking. Just a quick spritz with a spray bottle :) Kim
