You were concerned about turkey work because you are using canvas. You can do it on canvas, however, here's another stitch designed for counted backgrounds - which include canvas. See a tutorial here for velvet stitch:

!0 count - why don't you just do as Joan suggested and couch a strip of some eyelash yarn? Or that would look weird?
