French knitting or darning

I have a memory of my mother showing me how to make one and I would guess she learned about it from her mother, who likely learned it from her mother. I guess it's been around a lot longer than we have.

LOL - I remember having the wooden thing with pins sticking up, and making cords that then either turned into potholders , or just got lost.... FWIW, I only in the last couple of years have heard it called I-cord, and then only when done knitting - not with the pin/wooden spool gadget. But, a lot of knitting patterns I've been doing have you end up making an I-cord to do handles for bags, and stuff as Brat has listed.

Funny people should mention French Knitting. I've just started doing it again myself. However I'm using a "modified" spool which is slightly wider than the old cotton reel style and running a sash cord down the centre for reinforcement. I'm doing the actual "knitting" with DMC floss. The resulting cord will be made into Arabian horse halters and bridles when suitably adorned with beads and shells.

Sounds like a great application for it. Assuming you're going to use them for show halters/bridles? Hope you'll post a pic somewhere when one is done.

I'd be glad to. Still have a fair way to go with my first, it's a slow old technique but so far the results look nice and unlike a lot of the ropes and cords available, at least I can personalise the colours and embellisments. Actually, my life has become an obsession of Arabian Show Costumes and I spend much of my days now either surrounded by sequins, fabric and bling or covered in horse smells. Sheer heaven and just a pity I've had to wait until middle-age to do it!

What fun. The barn that I spent most of the adolescent/teen years at was an Arabian show barn. Personally, not a costume rider - but can certainly understand your being surrounded by the qccoutrement - and of course horse smells. Great idea.

I've been horseless for quite a while now - and DH knows I'm getting ready to take middle-age - so to speak - back into horse land. He likes to grimace, but I know he's understanding. This part of Virginia is the entry to horse country- Loudoun County, Fauquier County (famous for Middleburg,& Morven Park) and part of my reasoning for moving further out of town. The dog's vet and I spend the dog visits discussing horses, etc.

Anyhow - looking forward to seeing your pics. Have fun.
